An attacker accused of killing two people and wounding six others with a large kitchen knife in stabbings along the Las Vegas Strip is expected in court Friday. Yoni Barrios, 32, is scheduled to make an initial appearance in the afternoon, according to the Clark County District Attorney's Office. Maharashtra on Friday reported 366 new COVID-19 cases and five more deaths linked to the infection, taking the overall tally to 81,23,819 and the toll to 1,48,355, said the health department. The state has witnessed a significant jump in daily cases and coronavirus-linked fatalities as compared to the previous day. Maharashtra had reported 198 cases and one death due to the infection on Thursday. Of the total new cases, the highest 207 were registered in the Mumbai administrative circle followed by Pune (85), Nagpur (20), Latur (16), Nashik (14), Aurangabad (11), Kolhapur (7) and Akola (6) circles, said the department in a bulletin. The death toll in the Uttarkashi avalanche rose to 16 after 12 more mountaineers' bodies were recovered on Thursday, Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) said. Fifteen climbers are still believed to be missing. The avalanche occurred at a height of 17,000 feet on Tuesday when the NIM team was returning after summiting Draupadi Ka Danda II peak. Of the 16 bodies retrieved, 14 are of trainees and two of instructors, NIM said in a bulletin. Four bodies were recovered on the day of the avalanche. A search-and-rescue operation is in progress at the disaster site, the institute said. However, helicopters were pulled from the operation due to bad weather. Their operation will resume on Friday morning depending on the weather, it added. Mumbai on Thursday reported 80 COVID-19 cases and one death, which took the tally here to 11,50,908 and the toll to 19,734, a civic official said. The addition to the tally was below the 100-mark after two days, with Wednesday seeing 127 cases, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official pointed out. Of the new cases, only three are symptomatic, the official added. The recovery count rose by 99 and touched 11,30,399, leaving the metropolis with an active caseload of 775, he said. As per BMC data, the recovery count stood at 98.2 per cent and the overall growth rate of cases between September 29 and October 5 was 0.009 per cent. Three boys died and 11 others are undergoing treatment in the government hospital following suspected food poisoning at a home for destitute in nearby Tirupur on Thursday, officials said. The boys had rice mixed with 'rasam' and laddu for dinner on Wednesday. Some of them vomited and had dysentery. On Thursday morning, they had breakfast and their condition deteriorated and some fell unconscious, officials said. As all of them were admitted to a private hospital and they were later shifted to government hospitals in Tirupur and Avinashi, they said. However, three boys aged between 8 and 13 years died at the hospital, while others are undergoing treatment, with three being admitted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The toll remained unchanged at 19,733, while the count of recoveries rose to 11,30,184 after 85 patients recovered from the infection, he said. There has been a slight increase in the daily cases, as the city had on Monday recorded 66 infections. As per a bulletin issued by the civic body, 4,387 swab samples were tested in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of tests carried out in the city to 1,83,29,997. With a recovery rate of 98.2 per cent, Mumbai is left with 784 active cases, of which only 12 patients are symptomatic. Ten persons, including two children and as many women, were killed and seven others injured on Tuesday after a container truck hit a three-wheeler carrying passengers on the national highway near Vadodara city in Gujarat, police said. The condition of two of the injured persons is critical. Officials said the toll rose as more bodies were pulled out of the mangled three-wheeler and taken to the state-run hospital in Vadodara city. The incident occurred in the afternoon when the truck driver lost control of the vehicle after hitting a car.
