Pawar pitches for MVA allies to contest Maha Assembly and LS polls together

Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday pitched for contesting the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly and the Lok Sabha polls together with the Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena and Congress. Talking to reporters, he claimed that despite a split in the Shiv Sena, majority of the hardcore Shiv Sainiks who work on the ground stand behind Uddhav Thackeray. Pawar said MLAs and MPs may have aligned with the Eknath Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena after the split, but when polls take place, they will also know what the views of people are. After the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections, Thackeray had snapped ties with long-term ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and tied-up with the NCP and Congress to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in the state. The Thackeray government collapsed in June last year after a revolt led by Shinde against the Sena leadership. To a query on the issue of alliance, Pawar said, The understanding is that the Congress, NCP and Uddhav ...

Rahul Gandhi's ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra beyond politics, says Kamal Haasan

Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder Kamal Haasan on Friday said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra is a campaign that was beyond politics and stated there was a duty to 'reclaim' the country's "lost honour." Haasan had joined Gandhi in Delhi last month in the latter's pan-India foot march that started from Tamil Nadu in September last. "It is our responsibility to reclaim the lost ethos of our Bharat. This (Bharat Jodo campaign) is a yatra that is beyond politics," the actor-politician told reporters here. He further said he wanted to conduct the bulltaming sport 'Jallikattu' in Chennai and that efforts were on to secure permission for the same. The aim was to ensure the city-dwellers get a glimpse of the sport's glory, he added. Jallikattu is generally held in Madurai coinciding with the harvest festival Pongal in the second week of January.

SYL meet: Congress asks Mann to present strong case, SAD wants him to skip

Opposition Congress on Tuesday asked Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to strongly present the state's case during a meeting convened by Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on the contentious Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue. However, Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal said Mann should skip the Wednesday meeting in New Delhi. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar will also attend the meeting "As the leader of a party that has led historic Morchas to protect Punjab's lifeline, I warn you not to enter into any negotiations aimed at giving our river waters to any state in violation of the nationally and internationally accepted Riparian Principle," Badal said, addressing Mann. Congress says PM Modi's New Year 'gift' cuts rations of 810 mn poor by 50%

The Congress on Tuesday alleged that the Modi government has reduced the ration of the 81 crore poor people by 50 percent in the new year. The opposition party said 81 crore Indians who were eligible for 10 kilograms of foodgrains will now get only five kilograms. "The year 2023 began with the depressing news that PM Modi's Cabinet has discontinued the Pradhan Mantri Garib Anna Kalyan Yojana (PMGKAY), which provided an additional 5 kgs of food grains to beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA)," said AICC general secretary Jairam Ramesh. He said with this sudden reduction of rations by 50 percent, the prime minister has taken this "regressive" decision with no consultation with state governments nor any discussion in Parliament. The Centre had undertaken the distribution of free food grains for 28 months under PMGKAY in view of the Covid pandemic but the scheme ended in December. However, the Cabinet has decided that subsidised foodgrains distributed to about 81.35
