Cold waves intensify across Kashmir, many places see season's lowest temp

Cold conditions intensified in Kashmir as the minimum temperature dipped several degrees below the freezing point and many places experienced the season's coldest night, officials said Sunday. The valley experienced a dry but colder Christmas this year, the MeT office said. However, there is a possibility of a wet spell next week. The minimum temperature on Saturday night went several degrees below the freezing point and was below normal across the valley except in Gulmarg, the officials said. The intense cold conditions led to freezing of water supply lines in many areas as well as the freezing of the interiors of the Dal Lake, they said. The minimum temperature in Srinagar settled at minus 5.8 degrees Celsius -- down from minus 5.4 degrees Celsius Thursday night, the officials said. Slight respite from cold conditions in Kashmir; weather to remain dry

There was a slight respite in cold conditions in the Kashmir Valley as the minimum temperature improved at most places, officials said on Friday. The meteorological department said the weather is likely to remain mainly dry for the next two-three days. The minimum temperature in Srinagar city, which recorded so far its lowest of minus 5.5 degrees Celsius Wednesday night, settled at minus 4.8 degrees Celsius Thursday night, the officials said. They said Pahalgam, which serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath Yatra, recorded a low of minus 6.4 degrees Celsius, compared to minus 6.8 degrees Celsius Wednesday night. The famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir's Baramulla district recorded a low of minus 5.5 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in frontier Kupwara district settled at minus 5.1 degrees Celsius, while Qazigund, the gateway town to the valley, recorded minus 4.6 degrees Celsius, the officials said. Slight respite from intense cold conditions in Kashmir after snowfall

Snowfall in some parts and brief rainfall in most areas of Kashmir has resulted in respite from intense cold wave conditions on Monday, officials said. Srinagar recorded a low of 2.2 degrees Celsius Sunday night up nearly four degrees from the previous night's minus 1.8 degrees Celsius. They said Qazigund, the gateway town to the valley, recorded the minimum of 1.2 degrees Celsius. The nearby south Kashmir town of Kokernag recorded a low of minus 2.3 degrees Celsius. The mercury in Kupwara in north Kashmir settled at a low of 1.5 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam, which serves as the base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra, recorded a low of minus 4.1 degrees Celsius down from minus 3.8 degrees Celsius the previous night. Severe cold grips northwest India; no relief likely for 3 days, IMD says

Severe cold wave conditions were observed in parts of Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh, the India Meteorological Department said on Sunday. The MeT office also said cold wave swept parts of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Churu in Rajasthan reported the lowest minimum temperature of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius in northwest India followed by Sikar (minus 2.5 degrees Celsius) and Amritsar (minus 0.5 degree Celsius), the IMD said. The Safdarjung Observatory, which provides representative data for Delhi, recorded a minimum temperature of 4.6 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal and the lowest this season so far. Cold conditions in parts of Rajasthan, Churu records lowest temp of 5.4 deg

Cold conditions prevailed in parts of Rajasthan with Churu recording the lowest temperature of 5.4 degrees Celsius in the state on Monday, the MeT department said. Sikar recorded a minimum temperature of 5.6 degrees Celsius, followed by Alwar (5.7 degrees Celsius), Sangaria (6 degrees Celsius), Pilani (6.6 degrees Celsius), Eranpura Road (6.8 degrees Celsius), Nagaur (7.3 degrees Celsius) and Sriganganagar (7.6 degrees Celsius). State capital Jaipur recorded a low of 10.7 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperatures were recorded between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius at most of the places in Rajasthan. Weather conditions are likely to remain the same in next 24 hours, according to the MeT department.
