India's coal import declines 27% to 16 mn tonnes in October

India's coal import registered a decline of 26.8 per cent to 15.75 million tonnes (MT) in October over the same month a year ago. The country had imported 21.50 MT of coal in October 2020, according to data compiled by mjunction services. "India's coal and coke imports in October 2021 through the major and non-major ports are estimated to have decreased by 26.8 per cent over October 2020," it said. mjunction -- a joint venture between Tata Steel and SAIL -- is a B2B e-commerce company and also publishes research reports on coal and steel verticals. However, coal import in October was up 6 per cent as compared to 14.85 MT imported during September 2021, the data show. Of the total import in October 2021, non-coking coal was at 9.47 MT, against 14.46 MT imported in October last year. Coking coal import was at 4.05 MT, lower than 4.92 MT imported in October 2020. Coal dispatch by CIL to power sector rises 23% in April-November

Dispatch of coal by state-owned CIL to the power sector increased 22.5 per cent to 340 million tonne (MT) during April-November period of the ongoing fiscal year. CIL's despatches to coal-based power plants in the year-ago period stood at 277.4 MT, the PSU said in a statement. "At a thumb rule specific coal consumption of 0.67 Kg, that is the quantity of coal required to generate one unit of power, CIL's coal helped generate 507.46 Billion Units (BU) of power during the referred period spurring 22.5 per cent growth compared to 414.08 BU same period last year," it said. This is higher than the growth of overall domestic coal-based generation including despatches from sources other than CIL. As compared to pre-pandemic period of April-November 2019, the growth in power generation from CIL's coal is 16 per cent when dispatch to power plants was 292.88 MT. Seven firms, including JSW Steel, submit bids for coal blocks

JSW Steel and Adhunik Power & Natural Resources are among seven companies that have submitted bids for four coal blocks put up for sale under "second attempt" of auction process for 11 mines for commercial mining. These coal mines were also offered in the first attempt launched on March 25 this year and had fetched single bids. "A total of 7 companies have submitted their bids in the auction process," the coal ministry said in a statement. The seven firms are Auro Coal Pvt Ltd, JSW Steel, MP Natural Resources Pvt Ltd, Adhunik Power & Natural Resources, Assam Mineral Development Corp Ltd, Virtuous Mining Ltd and Twenty First Century Mining Pvt Ltd. Total seven bids were received by the ministry for four coal blocks namely Beheraband North Extn, GondbaheraUjheni East, Lalgarh (North) and Tokisud Block II.
