Madras HC orders Tamil Nadu to set uniform Covid-19 rules for carmakers

The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed officials to visit the factories of car makers near here, including that of Renault-Nissan, to put in place uniform COVID-19 guidelines like maintenance of physical distance between workers in such premises. This is to ensure that uniform guidelines are imposed and if a departure is necessary, the special reasons for it should be indicated, the first bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy said. The present norms being followed may not be tweaked by the Renault management, the bench said. The court was passing further interim orders on the public interest writ petition from the workers union, by its president Balaji Krishnan. The plea challenged the May 8 notification of the Revenue Disaster Management department, which gra

Covid: Amid localised lockdowns, auto firms log subdued sales in April

Major automobile manufacturers Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor, Tata Motors and Kia on Saturday reported a decline in passenger vehicle sales in April compared to March this year as the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic hit dispatches. However, Mahindra & Mahindra along with Honda Cars India posted sequential growth in their passenger vehicle sales last month. Sales in April this year are not comparable with that of the corresponding month a year ago as companies had reported zero sales due to the nationwide lockdown imposed to curb the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) reported a 4 per cent decline in total sales to 1,59,691 units in April as compared to 1,67,014 units in March this year. Similarly, Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) posted total sales of 59,203 units in April 2021, a decline of 8 per cent from 64,621 units it had sold in March this year. Honda Cars India on Saturday reported a 28 per cent increase in its domestic sales to 9,072 units last month as compared to 7,103 units in March this year. The company said it has exported 970 units in April. Of course, it has had an impact on the business and deliveries in the marketplace," Honda Cars India Senior Vice President and Director (Marketing & Sales) Rajesh Goel said in a statement.
