Will seek death penalty for Godhra train burning convicts: Gujarat govt

The Gujarat government on Monday told the Supreme Court that it will press for death penalty to 11 convicts whose sentences in the 2002 Godhra train burning case were commuted to life imprisonment by the state's high court. A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala also fixed the bail pleas of several accused in the case for hearing after three weeks. It asked counsel for both sides to file a consolidated chart giving details such as actual sentences awarded to them and the period spent in jail till now. We will be seriously pressing for award of death penalty to the convicts whose death penalties were commuted into life imprisonment (by the Gujarat High Court). This is the rarest of rare cases where 59 people, including women and children, were burnt alive, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Gujarat government, told the bench. It is consistent everywhere that the bogey was locked from outside. Fifty-nine died, ...

BJP national spokesperson M Kikon battling anti-incumbency seeks third term

Mmhonlumo Kikon has everything going for him he is the party's national spokesperson, a published poet, and an advisor in the outgoing government. Except for the anti-incumbency factor and dissidence among some of his former core associates, the BJP legislator could have almost surely been looking for a third straight term from Bhandari constituency in Wokha district. Also, the thin winning margins of his last two successful campaigns are proving to be thorns for the sitting MLA. "He has become inaccessible. He is no longer in touch with the grassroots. And he will have to pay for it with his seat," said Nyamo Odyuo, who was among the close associates of M Kikon in his last two election campaigns. Odyuo has now shifted allegiance to the Naga People's Front (NPF) and is busy canvasing support for its candidate, Achumbemo Kikon. A Kikon was defeated by M Kikon by 254 votes and 312 votes in 2013 and 2018 state polls respectively. While the defeated candidate was from the NPF on both

AAP slams EC on Shiv Sena ruling, calls it part of BJP's 'Operation Lotus'

The Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday condemned the decision of the Election Commission of India to recognise the faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as the real Shiv Sena and said it was an extension of the Bharatiya Janata Party's "Operation Lotus". "Operation Lotus" is a term used by opposition parties alleging foul play on the part of the BJP to topple governments in states by poaching legislators and bringing about splits in ruling parties. The Election Commission (EC) on Friday allotted the name 'Shiv Sena' and its poll symbol 'bow and arrow' to the group led by CM Shinde, in the process delivering a big blow to Uddhav Thackeray, whose father Bal Thackeray founded the outfit in 1966. Institutions like the EC are acting as though choreographed to singularly benefit the BJP, whose culture is one of naked power grab through any means, AAP Mumbai president Preeti Sharma Menon said in a statement here. "The conduct of EC will even put the proverbial 'caged parrot' to

Soros targeting not only PM Modi, but Indian democratic system: BJP

The BJP on Friday launched a frontal attack on billionaire investor George Soros, accusing him of not only targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi but also the Indian democratic system. This war is being mounted against India and what stands between the war and India's interests is Modi, BJP leader and Union minister Smriti Irani told reporters. Everyone should condemn his remarks in one voice, she said. She alleged that Soros wants to destroy Indian democracy and wanted some "hand-picked" people to run the government here. He has created a fund of over USD one billion to intervene in democratic systems, including in India, she claimed. Soros has said the turmoil engulfing Gautam Adani's business empire that has shaken the faith in India as an investment opportunity may open the door to a democratic revival in the country.
