Entered politics to become 'voice of the unheard', says Varun Gandhi

BJP MP Varun Gandhi on Saturday said he entered politics to become the "voice of people", especially those who could not raise their voice. The Pilibhit MP, who was here on a day-long visit, addressed a programme at Puranpur block and asserted that "honesty" and "cleanliness" are very much needed in politics. He also said that politics should be centred around a point that "one should raise the voice of those people who are not able to raise their voice".

BJP wants a developed Karnataka, Congress sees as its ATM: PM Modi

In poll-bound Karnataka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday made a strong pitch for the return of the ruling BJP, lashed out at politics of manipulation and addressed a public rally at Davanagere after getting yet another rousing reception in his seventh visit to the southern state. The PM wrapped up a busy day of public engagements that also included a tribute to the legendary Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya and a Metro rail ride on a new route that Modi inaugurated. In yet another stinging attack on the Congress, he said it looks at Karnataka as an "ATM" to fill the coffers of its leaders. Seeking a resounding mandate for a successive stint for the BJP in Karnataka, Modi said a stable government led by the saffron party was the need of the hour for the State's fast paced development. Stressing that Karnataka should be brought out of the "politics of manipulation", he said BJP wants to make the State a driving force of developed India, while the Congress looks at it as "an ATM t

BJP trying to divert attention from Adani issue by making accusation: RaGa

With the BJP accusing him of insulting OBCs with his "Modi surname" remark, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said he has been talking of brotherhood in all his speeches and the ruling party was just trying to divert attention from the Adani issue by making such allegations. Gandhi was on Thursday sentenced to two years in jail by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his "why all thieves have Modi surname" remark. Several BJP leaders, including party chief J P Nadda, have accused Gandhi of insulting Other Backward Classes (OBCs) through his remark in 2019. Asked about the BJP's allegation, Gandhi said at a press conference here, "Look at any of my speeches in the Bharat Jodo Yatra, I am saying that all communities are the same, everyone should move forward together, there should be brotherhood, there should be no hate, there should be no violence. So my position is absolutely clear." "This is not an issue of OBCs, this is an issue of the relationship between

Perception of UP changed under BJP, state growing in all sectors: CM Yogi

People's perception of Uttar Pradesh as a "mafia and gunda raj" has changed in the six-year rule of the BJP and the state is registering growth in all sectors under the double-engine government, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Saturday. Adityanath was speaking at an event to mark the first anniversary of his government's second term. Deputy chief ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak and the BJP's state unit chief Bhupendra Chaudhary and others were present on the occasion. During his address, Adityanath said the highlights of the government's achievements in the past six years are being presented by public representatives in all the state's 403 assembly constituencies. "Today, Uttar Pradesh is known for 'mahotsava (festivals)' and not mafia," he said at a press conference. "Unlike in the past, when officials were shuffled like a pack of cards, district magistrates are completing their full terms and are providing benefits of the government's schemes to all secti

Will fight this battle both legally, politically: Cong on disqualification

Hitting out at the government over Rahul Gandhi's disqualification from Lok Sabha, the Congress on Friday said it was "a black day for Indian democracy" and asserted that the battle will be fought both "legally and politically". The Opposition party also alleged that the action was driven by "political vendetta". Gandhi was disqualified from Lok Sabha on Friday, a day after he was convicted by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his "Modi surname" remark. Announcing his disqualification, the Lok Sabha Secretariat in a notification said that it was effective from March 23, the day of his conviction. Reacting to Gandhi's disqualification, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the BJP made all efforts to get him disqualified as he was speaking the truth. "He has been removed from the House for speaking the truth, fighting for the Constitution and for people's rights," Kharge alleged. "This was not a question of backward class, Lalit Modi and Nirav Modi are not

Opposition parties approaching SC against 'dictatorship' of BJP: AAP

The AAP on Friday said 14 opposition parties have approached the Supreme Court against the alleged arbitrary use of central probe agencies in an attempt to raise their voice against the "dictatorship" of BJP. Senior AAP leader and Delhi minister Atishi also alleged that the BJP has become a "washing machine" which cleans all the dirt on political leaders once they join it. The AAP is among the 14 parties, led by the Congress, which approached the apex court on Friday, alleging misuse of central probe agencies against political opponents. These parties seek pre- and post-arrest guidelines to be followed by the agencies such as the CBI and the ED. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear their plea on April 5. "Approaching Supreme Court is an attempt to oppose BJP's dictatorship, misuse of central agencies by the BJP," Atishi told reporters. "BJP is a washing machine. They file cases against opposition leaders to pressure them and to poach them. Once they join BJP, all cases end. Assam

BJP demands RaGa's apology, Rajya Sabha proceedings adjourned till 3:30 pm

Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 3:30 pm in the post-lunch session on Friday as ruling BJP members demanded an apology from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his "democracy in danger" remark in the UK. When the Upper House of Parliament reassembled at 2:30 pm after an earlier adjournment, Deputy Chairman Harivansh tried to take up private members' business on further discussion on a resolution. However, treasury bench members created an uproar and demanded Gandhi's apology. The resolution, moved by IUML's abdul Wahab, was regarding the need to implement the recommendations of the Sachar Committee to help Madrasas to modernise and enact a legislation to prevent atrocities against minorities. The deputy chairman asked the members to maintain order but ruckus continued, and he then adjourned the House till 3:30 pm. In the pre-lunch session, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said the House is in "disorder from both sides", amid sloganeering by ruling BJP and Opposition members over

Securing absolute majority in Assembly polls top priority: Bihar BJP chief

The BJP's new Bihar unit chief Samrat Chaudhary on Thursday asserted that securing all 40 Lok Sabha seats of the state next year and ensuring an "absolute majority" for his party in the assembly polls of 2025 will be his top priority. Currently the Leader of the Opposition in the state legislative council, Chaudhary, who was a minister in the Nitish Kumar government till the JD(U) leader remained with NDA, also did not deny that by hedging its bets on him, the BJP has sought to make a dent in the "Luv-Kush" base of the Bihar chief minister. "The BJP cares for all. But, of course, where else would Luv Kush go except the place where Lord Rama abides", Chaudhary replied, tongue in cheek, to questions from journalists about the "Kurmi-Koeri" combine, known by the name of the mythical twins in Bihar's political lexicon. The development is an indication of the challenges faced by the BJP in a state where it has become a force to reckon with but feels hamstrung by the "pro-upper caste ...
