Single-digit rise in sales: Why passenger vehicle firms saw no cheer in Dec

Domestic sales of passenger vehicles (cars, vans and utility vehicles) is estimated to have risen approximately six per cent in December. That came on the low base of December 2016, when sales had declined nearly 1.4 per cent after demonetisation. Hyundai, second biggest in the segment, reported flat growth; Mahindra & Majhindra (M&M), the third biggest company, saw a seven per cent decline in sales. These are sales to dealerships. The industry's growth, however, was supported by a double-digit growth in sales volume of Maruti Suzuki. The company, which sells every second passenger vehicle (PV) in India, clocked 11.4 per cent growth in December volumes, dispatching 118,560 units to dealers. It had seen a decline of a little over four per cent in December 2016. The company's volume growth was supported by a 23 per cent increase in sales of compact cars, to 53,336 units. This segment has Maruti's best sellers, the Dzire and Baleno. The company's utility vehicle segment expanded

70% of auto sales to be 'digitally influenced' by 2020, says Report

Almost 70 per cent of automobile sales -- translating into transactions worth about USD 40 billion -- in India would be "digitally influenced" by 2020 from the current USD 18 billion, a report today said. The report by Facebook and Bain & Company sought to examine the impact of digital technologies like social media and Internet of Things (IoT) on the automotive industry. Social media is expected to become a major influencer, driving sales of about USD 23 billion by 2020. Also, most people do a significant part of their research before purchasing a car online now, which makes it important that auto makers make digital media an important part of their marketing strategy. Also, many post-purchase activities are now happening online. By 2020, up to 40 per cent of consumers are expected to book repair and maintenance services online, while about 30 per cent will go online to purchase vehicle accessories, up from 14 per cent and 8 per cent respectively today. However, most ...

Auto sales flat in Feb after note ban impact wanes

The impact of a flat volume in two wheelers weighs upon the February performance of domestic automobile industry. The overall industry showed a growth of less than a per cent even though passenger and commercial vehicles grew at 7 and 9 per cent, respectively. This, however, is an improvement after three consecutive decline in combined industry volumes (sold to dealers) post demonetisation in November. The best performance was put forward by the passenger vehicle (cars, utility vehicles and vans) in February with a nine per cent growth to 255,359 units. "We are now witnessing steady recovery in the industry. Impact of demonetisation is steadily waning and we expect the impact to gradually fade away in the next 1-2 months," SIAM Director General Vishnu Mathur said after releasing the data on Friday. Growth was led by a double digit surge in volumes of Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Toyota and Honda among others. The FY17 growth could still be in double or near double digit in case of ...
