Domestic sales of passenger vehicles (cars, vans and utility vehicles) is estimated to have risen approximately six per cent in December. That came on the low base of December 2016, when sales had declined nearly 1.4 per cent after demonetisation. Hyundai, second biggest in the segment, reported flat growth; Mahindra & Majhindra (M&M), the third biggest company, saw a seven per cent decline in sales. These are sales to dealerships. The impact of a flat volume in two wheelers weighs upon the February performance of domestic automobile industry. The overall industry showed a growth of less than a per cent even though passenger and commercial vehicles grew at 7 and 9 per cent, respectively. This, however, is an improvement after three consecutive decline in combined industry volumes (sold to dealers) post demonetisation in November.The best performance was put forward by the passenger vehicle (cars, utility vehicles and vans) in February with a nine per cent growth to 255,359 units. "We are now witnessing steady recovery in the industry. Impact of demonetisation is steadily waning and we expect the impact to gradually fade away in the next 1-2 months," SIAM Director General Vishnu Mathur said after releasing the data on Friday.
