All sides hopeful of victory amid varied results in exit polls in Tripura

The crucial but tiny state of Tripura, which the BJP had grabbed from the CPI(M) in a surprise win in 2018, had exit results from three pollsters which varied substantially. IndiaToday-MyAxis indicated that the BJP would get between 36-45 seats in the 60-member assembly by garnering 45 per cent of the popular vote, most of it in the plains where Bengalis live, giving it a spectacular win. It also predicted the Left-Congress combine would get a paltry 6-11 seats with just 32 per cent of the popular vote, a huge slide from its 43 per cent vote share in 2018. The newbie party Tipra Motha, founded by former royal Pradyot Kishore Mankiya Debbarma, is shown as gathering 9-16 seats from the tribal areas with a concentrated 20 per cent of the vote share. Give change a chance: Mallikarjun Kharge to Meghalaya, Nagaland voters

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday urged the people of Meghalaya and Nagaland to give change a chance as polling in the two northeast states was underway. "People of Meghalaya and Nagaland are looking towards progressive, welfare-oriented governments," Kharge said in a tweet. "Welcome our first time voters to participate in this democratic process for a better future. Urge our sisters and brothers of Meghalaya and Nagaland to give change a chance," he said. Polling began in 59 of 60 assembly constituencies in Meghalaya at 7 am on Monday with voters set to seal the electoral fate of 369 candidates. Voting for the Nagaland Assembly polls also began at 7 am, with electors set to decide the electoral fate of 183 candidates.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday urged voters in Meghalaya and Nagaland to cast their votes in record numbers. Assembly polls are being held in the two northeast states on Monday. Polling personnel killed, 12 others injured in Nagaland accident

One polling personnel was killed and 12 others were injured when the vehicle in which they were travelling met with an accident near Thillong bridge in Doyang. The polling officials were on their way to Sungro for election duty in the Sungro sector of the Sanis Assembly constituency, according to officials.The apparent cause of the accident seems to be a mechanical failure. The injured people have been transported to the District Hospital Wokha.A new team of polling personnel along with polling materials/machinery from the reserve polling personnel have been dispatched from the Wokha headquarters.EVM machines will be replaced from the reserve if required, said Deputy Commissioner & District Election Officer, Wokha Ajit Kumar Ranjan.Nagaland along with Meghalaya is scheduled to go for polls on Monday, February 27.

Maharashtra Assembly bypolls: 41.1% voter turnout in Chinchwad till 5pm

A voter turnout of 41.1 per cent was recorded till 5 pm on Sunday in Chinchwad Assembly seat and 45.25 per cent in Kasba Assembly seat in Maharashtra, with several of those standing in the voting queue speaking about better roads, proper waste management and adequate water supply being the issues they want addressed. 'Nagas should change mindset that women can't be in decision-making bodies'

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has stressed the need for people of the state to change their mindset that Naga women cannot be in decision-making bodies. The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), headed by Rio, has fielded two women candidates in Western Angami and Dimapur-III constituencies. Nagaland is yet to get a woman MLA in the 60-member House since it got statehood in 1963. The NDPP manifesto envisages gender equality, Rio said on Thursday. Altogether four women candidates have filed nominations for the February 27 elections. Besides the two NDPP nominees, the Congress and the BJP have put up women candidates in Tenning and Atoizu seats respectively. Women's representation is a contentious issue in Nagaland. In 2017, two persons were killed in clashes during bands called by tribal bodies opposed to Urban Local Body election. The BJP has released its manifesto for the upcoming Nagaland assembly elections, promising a special package for the eastern part of the state and establishment of a board for the holistic development of the region if the party returns to power for the second time in a row. The BJP and its ally NDPP are contesting the February 27 assembly elections with a 20:40 seat-sharing arrangement. In its manifesto released by party president JP Nadda on Tuesday, the saffron party also announced a slew of measures for creating infrastructure, economic advancement, and boosting healthcare and agriculture, besides skill development. Five injured, vehicles damaged in pre-poll violence in Nagaland: Police

At least five people were injured and several vehicles were damaged in pre-poll violence in Nagaland, police said on Sunday. National People's Party (NPP) and LJP supporters clashes in Thonoknyu assembly seat in Noklak district on Sunday afternoon. Four people sustained minor injuries as the supporters of both parties engaged in heavy stone-pelting. The situation was brought under control following the deployment of state police, Indian Reserve Battalion and Border Security Force (BSF), a police officer said.
