Shubman Gill and Mohammed Shami took centre stage in Dubai on Thursday as India beat Bangladesh by six wickets in their opening encounter of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. India will now have the chance to beat Pakistan on Sunday and book their place in the semi-finals early in the tournament.
Earlier, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first. However, their decision backfired quickly as they lost Soumya Sarkar (0) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (0) to Shami and Harshit Rana in the first two overs.
Shami then removed Mehidy Hasan Miraz (5) before Axar Patel dismissed Tanzid Hasan (25) and Mushfiqur Rahim (0) on back-to-back deliveries to reduce Bangladesh to 35 for 5.
However, Towhid Hridoy, along with Jaker Ali (68), added 154 runs for the sixth wicket to get Bangladesh out of trouble before Shami got the wicket of Jaker Ali to complete 200 wickets in ODI cricket. He also dismissed Tanzim Hasan (0) after Harshit Rana ended the fiery cameo of Rishad Hossain (18).
Shami then took the wicket of Taskin Ahmed (3) to complete his five-wicket haul in the match. Meanwhile, Towhid Hridoy (100) completed his maiden ODI hundred before getting dismissed off Harshit Rana, and India finally bundled out Bangladesh for 228.
In reply, India got off to a good start as Rohit Sharma (41), along with Shubman Gill, added 69 runs for the first wicket before losing his wicket to Taskin Ahmed. Virat Kohli (22) looked in good touch but lost his wicket to Rishad Hossain. Shreyas Iyer (15) tried to boost India’s run rate but eventually ended up handing a simple catch to mid-on off Mustafizur Rahman.
Rishad then removed Axar Patel (8) to put India under pressure in the chase. However, Shubman Gill (101 not out) and KL Rahul (41 not out) added an unbeaten 87-run partnership for the fifth wicket to finally take India over the line in a 229-run chase, with the scoreboard reading 231 for 6 after 46.3 overs.
