Although India’s population crossed 1.4 billion in 2021, the growth rate has reduced drastically over the last few years.

Data from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2022 report shows that the country’s growth rate almost halved from 1.38 per cent in 2010 to 0.68 per cent in 2021. It is expected to decline further to 0.24 per cent by 2050 (see chart 1).

However, India is still expected to surpass China to become the most populous country by 2023 — five years ahead of target. By the end of this decade, India will have 7 per cent more people
