It has been 20 years of the Delhi Metro, 20 years of a public transport system that has been the great class leveller and transformed the way Dellhiites work, party and manage their hectic lives in a city' that stretches across three states. As 2022 winds down, it's also time to track the past, present and future of a lifeline that connects far corners of the sprawling National Capital Region (NCR) comprising Delhi, of course, and also its thriving suburbs Gurgaon and Noida, as well as industrial cities Ghaziabad and Faridabad. It started in December 2002 with a corridor of just 8.2 km spanning six stations on the Red Line and has now grown to over 390 km. The network span comprises 286 stations (including the Noida Greater Noida Metro Corridor and Gurgaon's Rapid Metro). The multi-hued network now with lines in yellow, blue, green, grey and in multiple shades of pink, including magenta and violet transformed the landscape of the city and boosted its transport infrastructure. The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) experiment imploded in 2022 putting a question mark on the political future of Uddhav Thackeray even as the massive split in the Shiv Sena and its aftermath kept the political pot boiling in Maharashtra throughout the year. Maharashtra, which was governed by the Congress till 1977-78 and later in the early 90s, has been following coalition politics centred around 'aghadis' (coalition fronts of the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party) and 'yuti' (Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party). The upheaval in the Sena resulting in the collapse of the MVA government was the second such instance in the state's political history. As a minister in 1978, Sharad Pawar had led a rebellion and toppled the Vasantdada Patil government to become the chief minister at the age of 38. The era of coalition politics took an unprecedented turn this year when Eknath Shinde walked out with 39 rebel legislators of the Shiv Sena and claimed to be the original Sena. Never before ...

Tackling violence perpetrated by terror groups, close monitoring of activities of some NGOs and efforts to ameliorate the woes of persecuted minorities of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan were some of the key issues which dominated the agenda of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in 2022. The ministry also initiated the process of complete overhaul of criminal laws, especially the Indian Penal Code (IPC) 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) 1973 and the Indian Evidence Act 1872, and adapt them in accordance with the contemporary needs and aspirations of the people. Action against Chinese-controlled predatory lending apps, which allegedly harass, blackmail and adopt harsh recovery practices and strict vigil along the international borders, some of them have seen "demographic changes", also kept the MHA busy in the year. One of the major steps that the MHA took in 2002 was declaring the Popular Front of India (PFI) and several of its associates banned for five years under t

From limiting coverage of pre-matric scholarship for OBCs students to setting up a commission to examine the matter of giving Scheduled Caste status to religious converts who were 'historically' SCs, the Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry remained in spotlight this year. The ministry evoked critical reactions from various quarters over its decision to limit its pre-matric scholarship scheme meant for OBC and minority communities to students of classes 9 and 10. Earlier, the pre-matric scholarship used to cover education for grades 1 to 8 as well for students belonging to minority communities. The ministry also appointed a commission headed by former CJI K G Balakrishnan to examine the matter of giving Scheduled Caste status to new people who claim to "historically" have belonged to the SCs, but have converted to a religion other than those mentioned in the presidential orders. Accessibility remains a major challenge for the physically challenged in India even this year. The ..

Nepal witnessed political turbulence in 2022 that dramatically turned rivals into allies and throned former guerrilla leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal "Prachanda" as the Prime Minister for a third time, as Kathmandu made efforts to balance ties with immediate neighbours India and China with high-profile talks and visits. Prachanda, the 68-year-old CPN-Maoist Centre chairman, surprisingly left his pre-poll alliance with the Nepali Congress and joined hands with rival CPN-UML led by former premier K P Sharma Oli and five other smaller parties to become prime minister. Elections to the lower house and seven provincial assemblies were held last month to end the prolonged political instability that had plagued the Himalayan nation. However, the polls resulted in a hung parliament, with the Nepali Congress emerging as the single largest party, followed by CPN-UML and Prachanda's CPN-Maoist. No party in the 275-member House of Representatives got 138 seats required to form a government. The whee

Political parties in Jammu and Kashmir, except the BJP, are disappointed as another year has passed by without the Centre living up to its promise of restoring statehood and holding assembly elections in the youngest union territory of the country. As the delimitation process and revision of the electoral rolls were completed in Jammu and Kashmir, the political parties were hopeful that the Election Commission will take the next logical step of announcing the poll schedule to the assembly of the union territory. However, this did not happen with 2022 coming to an end. The biggest news of the year emanating from Kashmir, however, was the targeted killings of Kashmiri Pandits in the valley by terrorists, which led to hue and cry across the country. A large number of Kashmiri Pandits, who had returned to the valley under the PM's Employment Package announced in 2007, fled to Jammu following killing of Rahul Bhat by terrorists inside his office in Chadoora area of Budgam district in ..

After three consecutive years of infusing huge funds, foreign portfolio investors retreated from the Indian equity markets in a big way in 2022 with the highest-ever yearly net outflow of nearly Rs 1.21 lakh crore. The huge outflow, which surpasses by a big margin the previous record of Rs 53,000 crore net withdrawal in 2008, came amid aggressive rate hikes by central banks globally but 2023 is expected to be better on positivity about overall macroeconomic trends in India, experts said. Apart from global monetary tightening, volatile crude, rising commodity prices along with Russia and Ukraine conflict led to an exodus of foreign money in 2022. Going ahead, the quantum of FPI outflows might not be as large as that seen in the first half of 2022 as India's growth is relatively promising compared to other developed and emerging economies, said Manish Jeloka, Co-head of Products and Solutions, Sanctum Wealth. Sanjiv Bajaj, Joint Chairman and MD of Bajaj Capital, said that FPI flows i
