TRAI is scheduled to meet telecom companies on March 27 on the development and implementation of Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC) detect solutions, as the regulator continues its offensive against pesky marketing calls and messages. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) further said that the exploitation of the DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) platform to bring all access providers (telcos) together with respect to UCC detect solutions will be a positive step in this direction. India will be the first country to auction spectrum for satellite communication, and it should be designed to attract investments in the sector, telecom regulator Trai chairman PD Vaghela said on Tuesday. Speaking at a Broadband India Forum summit on SatCom, Vaghela said the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) will soon make recommendations to make permissions required for satellite communication from various ministries -- Information and Broadcasting, Space and Telecom -- seamless to enhance ease of doing business in the sector. He also said Trai has received a reference from the Department of Telecommunication for the spectrum required to be put to auction and associated aspects of satellite-based communication. "I think India will be the first to handle the issue of auctioning the space base spectrum. We are working on it," Vaghela said. Trai will be coming out with some sort of model for the auction of space spectrum, he added. "But it should not kill the sector. That

Second time in eight years that TRAI will be issuing guidelines. Comes amid the Adani-NDTV spat. Regulator had released consultation paper in April
Telecom regulator Trai will issue a public consultation paper to discuss regulations for internet-based calling, messaging and entertainment apps in December, a senior official said on Wednesday. The Department of Telecommunications has sought recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) to set up a legal framework for the over-the-top (OTT) apps that provide calling and messaging services. "Trai officials will make presentation on OTT on November 25, after which issues for discussion will be framed and a consultation paper will be issued for the same next month," a senior Trai official told PTI. Under the new telecommunication bill, the government has proposed to place OTT apps that provide calling and messaging service as telecom services company. The telecom bill proposes OTT players also to comply with 'Know Your Customer' rules and facilitate lawful interception.

DoT has also sought feedback on the bill from all ministries of the Central government, state government and the public along with Trai
TRAI has argued that broadcasters are supplying signals of linear channels to OTT platforms circumventing Clause 5.6 of the Uplinking and Downlinking guidelines for television channels
The new telecom bill is expected to be in place in 6-10 months but the government is not in a hurry, communications minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Friday. "Basis consultation process, we will create final draft. That draft will then go through committee processes of Parliament. Then it has to go (to) Parliament. I see a timeline of 6-10 months but we are not in a hurry," Vaishnaw said when asked about a timeline for implementation of the final bill. The Department of Telecommunications has set the deadline of October 20 on the draft bill. The bill seeks to replace three laws: the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1933 and the Telegraph Wires (Unlawful Possession) Act, 1950. However, with a view to ensuring smooth transition to the new framework and avoid any possible disruption, the bill provides for continuity of actions taken under the repealed laws. It also provides that rules under the repealed laws would continue till such time that new rul

Digital changes are now a big deal in India, where a lot of the country's government-to-citizen services as well as a vast swathe of the payments business ride on technology platforms
From the industry's perspective, the average revenue per user (ARPU) per month has been dropping annually, though things have been different after telcos raised tariffs
Telcos have been unhappy that the base price fixed by the regulator for a period of 30 years is virtually the same as what they had recommended in 2018 at Rs 492 crore for a pan-India 1Mhz spectrum.
Telcos offering segmented tariff offerings has been a bone of contention for a while
