Minister for Sugarcane Development and Sugar Mills Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary said the Uttar Pradesh government will ensure that sugar mills pay the dues of sugarcane farmers within a week. "At present, sugarcane farmers in 105 sugar mills of the state are getting payment within 10 days," he told reporters on Sunday. Hitting out at the opposition parties, Chaudhary said, "During previous governments, ensuring prompt payment to sugarcane farmers was considered a difficult task." He informed that over Rs 2.04 lakh crore had been paid to the farmers for their sugarcane produce within a period of six years. The minister said Rs 21,620 crore had been paid till March 31 against the crushing of 930 crore tonnes of sugarcane this season. He said at present 96 sugar mills with high production are running in the state. "At present, sugarcane farmers are getting their payment within 10 days in 105 sugar mills of the state. We are making efforts to bring this to a week (from giving sugarcane crop to sugar mills)," Chaudhary told reporters here. He said during previous governments, ensuring early payment to sugarcane farmers was considered a herculean task. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday accused the Samajwadi Party of apathy towards sugarcane farmers, alleging they had to kill themselves and burn their crops during the SP rule because of lack of water and electricity for irrigation and timely payment of dues. Sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh owed Rs 4,832 crore to cane farmers as on September 1 for the crushing season 2021-22 ending later this month. However, Rs 30,368.73 crore or 86.27 per cent of the total due has been paid, according to Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti. The minister informed the same to BSP MP Kunwar Danish Ali in a letter dated September 8, which was later posted on the social media platform Twitter by the latter. The cane crushing season runs from October to September. Ali had raised the issue of sugarcane arrears in Lok Sabha on August 5. In response to the same, the minister stated that out of a total payable of Rs 35,201.22 crore for 2021-22 marketing year (October-September), mills in Uttar Pradesh have paid Rs 30,368.73 crore to the farmers. Cane dues to be paid by sugar mills to farmers stood at Rs 4,445 crore during the 2020-21 season (October-September), with maximum arrears in Uttar Pradesh, Parliament was informed on Wednesday. During the 2020-21 season, a total of Rs 92,804 crore was to be paid towards sugarcane price to the farmers. Out of which Rs 88,359 crore has been paid and the balance Rs 4,445 crore dues are pending, as per the data placed before Lok Sabha by Minister of State for Food Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti. Of the pending dues during 2020-21 season, a maximum of Rs 3,752 crore cane dues is to be cleared by sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh, followed by Rs 394 crore in Maharasthra, Rs 64 crore in Chhattisgarh and Rs 63 crore in Haryana, the data showed. About Rs 52 crore dues need to be cleared to farmers in Uttarakhand, Rs 44 crore in Gujarat, RS 37 crore in Andhra Pradesh, Rs 25 crore in Tamil Nadu and Rs 9 crore in Punjab in the said period, it added.
