The stage is set for assembly polls in Nagaland, where over 13 lakh voters will decide the electoral fate of 183 candidates contesting in 59 out of a total of 60 seats on Monday. The ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and the BJP are contesting the polls on a 40:20 seat-sharing basis. The Congress, which ruled the state till 2003 and does not have any member in the current House, has fielded 23 aspirants. Polling will be held from 7 am to 4 pm, while counting of votes will be taken up on March 2. The Akuluto seat in Zunheboto district was won uncontested by BJP nominee and sitting MLA Kazheto Kinimi. The NDPP had allied with the BJP and formed government in the northeastern state in 2018, with backing from the JD(U) and an Independent. Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People's Party (NPP) supremo Conrad K Sangma on Monday asserted that neither he nor his party had any role in denying permission for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's election rally at the PA Sangma Sports Complex in Tura. The sports department has informed the West Garo Hills district authorities that permission cannot be given for the PM's rally there as construction debris may pose safety concerns. The saffron party, which last month snapped ties with ally NPP ahead of the February 27 assembly election, alleged that the ruling party were trying to stall a "wave of the BJP" in the state. In a statement issued here, the chief minister said the accusation made by the BJP was false as permissions for rallies are given by the Election Commission and the district administration is now a part of it. With Tripura Assembly elections due early next year, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Wednesday announced setting up of seven committees including Pradesh Election Committee (PEC) for the state, a senior party leader said. Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Birajit Sinha has been made the chairman of the 10-member election committee while AICC general secretary Ajay Kumar, who is also the in-charge of Tripura, AICC secretary Szarita Laitphlang, MLA Sudip Roy Barman and former TPCC president Gopal Chandra Roy are also members of the committee. A 16-member political affairs committee has also been declared with former TPCC president Gopal Chandra Roy its chairman.
