In a year when the Indian athletes will compete at the Asian Games and prepare for 2024 Paris Olympics, the Sports Ministry has got a fillip with the government allocating Rs 3,397.32 crore, an increase of Rs 723.97 crore, in the Union Budget here on Wednesday. The amount is more than the revised budget of the previous financial year (2022-23) when the ministry received Rs 2,673.35 crore, as against the actual allocation of Rs 3,062.60 crore. One of the reasons for the reduced revised allocation for 2022-23 could be the postponement of the Hangzhou Asian Games, which will be held this year. The ministry's flagship programme, 'Khelo India -- National Programme for Development of Sports' continues to be the government's priority, with it being allotted Rs 1,045 crore as against the revised allocation of Rs 606 crore during the previous financial year. The Sports Ministry has launched a mobile application for the athletes taking part in the upcoming Khelo India Youth Games. The Games will be held in Bhopal from January 30 to February 11. The app will allow access to all information about the Games, on a click of a button. The app gives an athlete a chance to check if his or her verified documents have been uploaded, before the start of the Games. After successful registration, the athlete can check the status of the issuance of their sporting kits, the hotel in which the athlete has to stay, transportation plan for to and from the venue, as well as important contact numbers on which athletes can call in case of an emergency.
Six-time Winter Olympian Shiva Keshavan on Saturday withdrew his candidature for an executive council member's position ahead of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) elections. Rowing Federation of India president Rajlaxmi Singh Deo will be elected unopposed to the post of vice president (female) in the December 10 elections after Alaknanda Ashok of Badminton Association of India pulled out on the last day of withdrawal. Keshavan, who had filed nomination papers for one of the four positions of the ordinary executive council members, withdrew his candidature to avoid "division of votes" among candidates from winter sports. Ice Skating Association of India's Amitabh Sharma and Ice Hockey Association of India's Harjinder Singh are also candidates for executive council members. "I decided to withdraw as it made no sense to have three people from winter sports that would divide votes. The Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) final will be held on February 25 while the two play-off prior to the mega match will be held on February 21 and 23 respectively, organizers said on Wednesday. "The playoffs are scheduled to be held on 21st February and on 23rd February. The grand finale of Pro Kabaddi Season 8 is scheduled to be held on 25th February," a media release issued here said on Wednesday. It also said that the top six teams will then battle it out for the PKL trophy. Anupam Goswami, CEO, Mashal Sports and League Commissioner, PKL said: "We have been able to conduct the league day-on-day with no break this is a huge achievement and milestone, not just for kabaddi, but for the resumption of all indoor & contact sports."
