Nitu Ghanghas (48kg) and the seasoned Saweety Boora (81kg) etched their names in history as they were crowned world champions after notching contrasting wins at the marquee tournament here on Saturday. Commonwealth Games gold medallist Nitu put up a stupendous performance to see off Mongolia's Lutsaikhan Altansetseg 5-0 and claim the title for the minimum weight category in front of a packed crowd, with Beijing Olympics bronze medallist and Nitu's idol Vijender Singh also present. Saweety made it two out of two for the hosts as she warded off a challenge from two-time medallist China's Wang Lina. Legendary athlete P T Usha on Sunday urged budding sportspersons to dedicate themselves to their chosen field and not get disheartened over "lack of facilities". The mascots of Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG)-2022, Asha and Mowgli, and its smart torch 'Amarkantak' were released along with the theme song on Saturday by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Union Minister Nisith Pramanik. Torch Amarkantak, named after the place where the Narmada River, considered the state's lifeline, originates, was also handed over by two players to the CM during the function. During the presentation, it was informed that this is the first smart torch in any game in the country. The torch is adorned with carvings of the renowned Mahakaleshwar temple, running cheetah and a lotus on top. The theme song has been rendered by well-known artiste Shaan. Venus Williams has withdrawn from the Australian Open for an undisclosed injury she sustained while playing in a tournament in Auckland, New Zealand this week. A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, Williams received a wild-card entry into the Australian Open last month to compete in what would have been her 22nd major at Melbourne Park. But the Australian Open said on Saturday the 42-year-old Williams had withdrawn from the tournament beginning Jan. 16. It did not provide specifics regarding the injury. It continues a run of misfortunes for Williams, who last played at Melbourne Park in 2021. A two-time Australian Open finalist, Williams injured an ankle and knee in that appearance when stumbling awkwardly at the net in a second-round match against Sara Errani.
