The higher reaches of Kullu, Lahaul and Spiti, Kinnaur and Shimla districts experienced another spell of snowfall on Saturday while light rains lashed mid and low hills. As many as 216 roads including three national highways have been blocked due to snow. A maximum of 119 roads are closed in Lahaul and Spiti, 31 in Kinnaur, 19 in Chamba, nine in Kullu, six in Mandi, two in Kangra and one in Shimla district. According to the meteorological (MeT) department, Kothi received 20 cm of snow, followed by Kalpa 17 cm, Gondla 13.5 cm, Kukumseri 5 cm while Kufri in the suburbs of state capital Shimla received traces of snow. Some areas in Kashmir received intermittent light snowfall amid a decrease in minimum temperatures in most parts of the Valley, officials said on Saturday. The bad weather also forced closure of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. Some areas in the Kashmir Valley, especially the upper reaches, received fresh light snowfall early on Saturday, the officials said. Pahalgam, the tourist resort town in south Kashmir's Anantnag district, recorded 13 inches of snow in the last 24 hours, followed by eight inches in Kokernag, six inches in Qazigund and four inches in Shopian, they said. There was very light snowfall in Srinagar, Ganderbal and some other areas in the plains. Some other areas in Jammu and Kashmir received intermittent rainfall. Tourists made a beeline to resorts in Shimla, Manali and Kufri after a fresh snowfall, increasing the occupancy in hotels to almost 70 per cent. As many as 7,164 vehicles had entered Shimla through Shoghi border in 12 hours till 8 pm on Friday. Mughal road, an alternate link connecting Kashmir with rest of the country, was closed for vehicular traffic on Sunday as most of the high altitude area experienced light to moderate snowfall overnight, officials said. Snowfall in higher reaches of Kashmir, including popular tourist destinations like Gulmarg and Sonamarg, and rains in plains brought wintry conditions earlier than usual in the valley, officials said on Thursday. "There was significant snowfall in many areas of Kashmir including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Gurez, and Karnah during the intervening night," the officials said. The air traffic to and from Kashmir was affected on Wednesday as all flights at the Srinagar airport were cancelled due to bad weather in the wake of heavy snowfall in the Valley, officials said. "All flights of all airlines have been cancelled," said Kuldeep Singh, director, Airport Authority of India (AAI), Srinagar airport. The flight operations at the airport were affected due to bad weather and low visibility in the wake of heavy snowfall across the Valley. A total of 41 flights have been cancelled, he said. The visibility was below 400 metres and the continuous snowfall made the operations impossible, he added. Singh said the passengers of the cancelled flights will be adjusted on the next available flights.
