A woman testified Monday that Harvey Weinstein sexually assaulted her in a hotel room during the Toronto Film Festival in 1991, then did it again when she went to confront him in the same hotel during the same festival 17 years later. Kelly Sipherd told a Los Angeles jury that she was a 24-year-old aspiring actor at the 1991 festival and didn't know who Weinstein was before she met him at a party. She said her friends there were abuzz about the man whose company Miramax had surged to the forefront of independent film and was making its mark at the Oscars. Sipherd said she was charmed by Weinstein at first as they discussed books and films. We got along very well, she said. He was very intelligent. We had a wonderful conversation. The Crime Branch wing of Kerala police on Thursday raided the residence of P C George in Erattupetta area of the district. The raid was carried out to find evidence in connection with the 2017 actress assault case, sources said. George has in the past expressed his support for actor Dileep in the case in which the latter is an accused. George was arrested twice this year for allegedly making hate speeches and later released on bail.
Delhi accounted for nearly 40 per cent of all rape cases and almost 25 per cent murder cases among 19 metropolitan cities in India in 2020, according to latest government data. Altogether, 1,849 murder cases and 2,533 rape cases were reported across the country in 2020, a year that witnessed COVID-19 outbreak and lockdowns, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data showed. The NCRB, which functions under the Union home ministry, classified 19 cities with over 20 lakh population as metropolitans -- Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Ghaziabad, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kanpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Pune and Surat. Delhi logged the maximum 461 (24 per cent of 1,849) murder cases in 2020 followed by Bengaluru (179), Chennai (15), Mumbai (148) and Surat (116), while Kolkata reported 53, according to the data. A total of 1,849 cases of murder were registered during 2020, showing a decrease of 8.3 per cent over 2019 (2,017 cases).
A medical student studying in a private college here was allegedly gang-raped by unidentified people on the outskirts of the city near Lalitadripura, police said on Wednesday. The student, riding pillion with her male friend, was on her way to Chamundi Hills when a few people waylaid them on Tuesday. The gang initially demanded money, but when they found nothing, attacked her friend and dragged her to a place where they committed the crime, police said. The victim has been admitted to a hospital. Based on her complaint, a case of gang-rape has been registered against unknown people, police added. The Mysuru police commissioner Dr Chandragupta visited the spot and formed multiple teams to probe the case.
