A Railway Protection Force (RPF) officer was injured in an accidental fire from an AK rifle of a Special Police Officer (SPO) at a railway station here, officials said on Monday. Identified as sub-inspector (SI) of the force, Sudhir Kumar Rai (48) was shifted to a hospital for treatment. He was injured due to an accidental fire from the rifle of SPO Harbajan Singh while crossing a foot-over bridge to exit the station after deboarding the Begumpura Express train around 2.10 pm, they said. The rifle went off when Harbajan was handling the weapon while taking charge from the previous sentry, they said, adding that a case has been registered into the incident.
The Railway Board is treating train drivers and managers in the "most inhuman manner" and meting out injustice to them in terms of their pay and duty hours, its largest employees' union alleged as it staged protests across the country on Monday. All India Railwaymen's Federation (AIRF) general secretary Shiva Gopal Mishra demanded that the authorities address the long-pending demands and grievances of the "running staff" without any further delay as there is a serious sense of disappointment and resentment brewing among them. According to the AIRF, all loco pilots -- shunting, goods trains, passenger trains, and express/mail -- are placed in a common pay-level under the seventh Central Pay Commission. The railways conducted a centralised computer-based exam on Sunday against a 70-per cent quota for 929 vacancies. The exam was conducted in 14 cities and 19 centres for Group "B" (officer-level) posts, the Indian Railways said. A total of 6,031 candidates were scheduled to appear in the exam. These exams are being held after a policy was introduced last year as part of the measures taken by the Railway Board for bringing in reforms in the selection process for promotion to Group "B" posts in the railways. It was decided to introduce the Centralised Computer Based (CBT) objective-type examination for conducting 70 per cent selections and 30 per cent Limited Departmental Competitive Examinations (LDCEs) in all departments that have organised services from the vacancy cycle starting January 2023. Concerned over rising working expenses, the Railway Board has asked its seven zones to review their expenditure on employee allowances for overtime, night duty and travel, and fuel and maintenance, sources have said. In a quarterly review meeting chaired by Railway Board Chairman V K Tripathi, it was found that the Ordinary Working Expenses (OWE) in current financial year up to May show that the seven zones have exceeded the Railways' average of 26 per cent increase over corresponding period of previous year, they said. These zones are Northeast Frontier Railway (37.9 per cent), Northern Railway (35.3 per cent), South Central Railway (34.8 per cent), South West Railway (33.1 per cent), North West Railway (29 per cent), Western Railway (28 per cent) and North Central Railway (27.3 per cent).
