It is possible to create world-class new knowledge and science on a large scale by promoting Indian languages, President Droupadi Murmu said on Monday while emphasising on the importance of imparting education in Indian languages. Speaking at the 36th convocation of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Murmu lauded the progress made by women in several sectors, including education, and noted that 55 per cent of the students who received their degrees, certificates and diplomas were women. "I am happy to note that there are 55 per cent girl students among those who received their degrees, certificates and diplomas at the university. Girl students account for more than half of the students who have received gold medals today. "I am happy to see the progress of women in various sectors, including education," she said. On Monday, 2,79,918 IGNOU students received their degrees, certificates and diplomas. IGNOU is playing an important role in nation building, Murmu said.

More than 11,200 tillers in Punjab, who have been occupying over 4,000 acres of land for generations but had no title rights, will get the ownership after paying due compensation as President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to a legislation in this effect, officials said on Thursday. The Punjab Bhondedar, Butemar, Dohlidar, Insar Miadi, Mukarraridar, Mundhimar, Panahi Qadeem, Saunjidar, or Taraddadkar (Vesting of Proprietary Rights) Bill, 2020 was passed by the Punjab Assembly in 2020 when the Congress government led by Amarinder Singh was in power. "The President gave assent to the Bill passed by the Punjab Assembly," an official said. The move allows property rights to more than 11,200 tenants occupying over 4,000 acres land after paying due compensation. It is expected that the legislation will empower tillers of such land, who belong mostly to the economically and socially weaker sections of society, the official said. The theme of this year's campaign will be Source Sustainability for Drinking Water', an official said. During Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain-2023, the significant role that water plays in the empowerment of women has been acknowledged with the theme 'Jal Shakti se Nari Shakti', he said.
