About Naveen Patnaik

Naveen Patnaik, the founder of Biju Janata Dal (BJD), is currently the chief minister of Odisha. The son of former CM Biju Patnaik, Naveen is the only CM who does not speak the language of the state. He is in his fourth term at the helm of the state government.

Initially seen as a reluctant heir to his father’s illustrious political career, Naveen returned to Odisha after Biju Patnaik’s death in 1997 and founded the BJD. Subsequently, he was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha from Aska Parliamentary constituency in the by-elections and became a member of the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Steel and Mines, a member of the Standing Committee on Commerce, and a Member of the Library Committee of Parliament. Later, he represented he same seat in the 12th Lok Sabha and was subsequently made the Union minister for mines in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

BJD allied with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Odisha Assembly elections in 2000, following which Naveen Patnaik became CM for the first time. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance lost the Lok Sabha elections in 2004. However, the coalition led by Naveen Patnaik won the state legislative elections and he became CM for a second time.

BJD quit the NDA in 2009 but won a huge victory in the Assembly polls that year. Patnaik became CM for a fourth time in 2014.

The BJD chief has said that the party would play an important role in government formation after the Lok Sabha elections 2019, as no party would win a clear majority. Odisha is also going to state polls along with the general election. Reportedly, he is making an effort to battle anti-incumbency of the past four terms by banking on policies that aid women. Will the suave author-turned-politician write another chapter under his name? It will be interesting to watch.

How investments are coming to Odisha if there is lawlessness, asks Patnaik

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday wondered how investors are making a beeline in the state if there is lawlessness as alleged by the opposition BJP and Congress. All over the country, investors talk about the fact that how peaceful Odisha is, Patnaik said while replying to the debate on home and general administration demands in the Assembly. "Getting investment to a state is a reflection of its law and order situation. No investment comes when the law and order situation is poor in a state. Odisha gets one of the highest investments in the country," he said. Patnaik condemns Centre's policies of LPG price rise, rice quota cut

BJD president and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday slammed the BJP-led central government for raising the price of LPG and slashing the quota of five kg of free rice to beneficiaries. These decisions are anti-women, claimed Patnaik, who had been supporting the schemes and policies of the Narendra Modi government for a long time. Hike of the LPG price and deduction of 5 kg rice by the Centre are clearly anti-women policies. I strongly condemn such policies, Patnaik said while addressing a BJD function marking the observance of International Women's Day. Earlier, the ruling party had staged a demonstration opposing the stoppage of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) under which the poor people covered under the PDS were provided with 5 kg of free rice to counter the adverse impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The BJD government was demanding continuance of the PMGKAY as the impact of the pandemic still hits the poor people who lost jobs and employment. The

Odisha CM Patnaik attempting to garner sympathy ahead of 2024 election: BJP

Senior BJP leader Jay Narayan Mishra on Friday rejected BJD president Naveen Patnaik's "anti-women" jibe at the saffron party and said the chief minister's statement was not based on facts, but an attempt to garner sympathy of women ahead of 2024 general elections. Patnaik in a video message immediately after the victory of BJD candidate Barsha Singh Bariha in Padampur on Thursday, had accused the state BJP leadership of disrespecting a grief-stricken woman who had recently lost her father. "I was hurt by the disrespect shown by the BJP towards the rookie nominee Barsha," he said. Bariha scored an emphatic win against BJP's Pradip Purohit by 42,679 votes. Mishra, the Leader of Opposition in Odisha Assembly in a statement claimed that Patnaik has an old habit of creating new stories for getting sympathy. "If the Chief Minister's claim that BJP is anti-women was true, today Narendra Modi would not have established himself as the chief servant of the country, BJP would not have won in
