Tamil Nadu Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and the officials of the state sports and youth affairs department held a meeting with Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Youth Affairs & Sports Anurag Thakur held a meeting in Chennai on Saturday.Taking to Twitter, Udhayanidhi Stalin said that Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur visiting Chennai was welcomed with love."We requested that the Union Government release Khelo India infrastructure fund for the state", Udhayanidhi Stalin said.In the meeting, the officials led by Udhayanidhi made a presentation explaining the steps taken by the MK Stalin government to improve the sports sector of the state and the future plans."We insisted on considering Tamil Nadu for the South Indian branch of Sports Authority of India. Also asked for the opportunity to host the National Youth Fest and Asian beach games in 2024", Udhayanidhi said.
In a year when the Indian athletes will compete at the Asian Games and prepare for 2024 Paris Olympics, the Sports Ministry has got a fillip with the government allocating Rs 3,397.32 crore, an increase of Rs 723.97 crore, in the Union Budget here on Wednesday. The amount is more than the revised budget of the previous financial year (2022-23) when the ministry received Rs 2,673.35 crore, as against the actual allocation of Rs 3,062.60 crore. One of the reasons for the reduced revised allocation for 2022-23 could be the postponement of the Hangzhou Asian Games, which will be held this year. The ministry's flagship programme, 'Khelo India -- National Programme for Development of Sports' continues to be the government's priority, with it being allotted Rs 1,045 crore as against the revised allocation of Rs 606 crore during the previous financial year. The Sports Ministry has launched a mobile application for the athletes taking part in the upcoming Khelo India Youth Games. The Games will be held in Bhopal from January 30 to February 11. The app will allow access to all information about the Games, on a click of a button. The app gives an athlete a chance to check if his or her verified documents have been uploaded, before the start of the Games. After successful registration, the athlete can check the status of the issuance of their sporting kits, the hotel in which the athlete has to stay, transportation plan for to and from the venue, as well as important contact numbers on which athletes can call in case of an emergency.
The mascots of Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG)-2022, Asha and Mowgli, and its smart torch 'Amarkantak' were released along with the theme song on Saturday by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Union Minister Nisith Pramanik. Torch Amarkantak, named after the place where the Narmada River, considered the state's lifeline, originates, was also handed over by two players to the CM during the function. During the presentation, it was informed that this is the first smart torch in any game in the country. The torch is adorned with carvings of the renowned Mahakaleshwar temple, running cheetah and a lotus on top. The theme song has been rendered by well-known artiste Shaan. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Friday launched the 'Khelo India Dashboard', a one-stop platform, which will give people all the information they need with regards to the various schemes that come under the programme. The digital platform will have statistical data on athletes, coaches, venues and schemes related to the Khelo India programme. The dashboard will be updated in real time and will aim to give "every citizen of the country access to all the information regarding the various offerings of Khelo India," said a Sports Authority of India (SAI) statement on Friday. "Easy accessibility and transparency has always always been given top priority (by the government), be it ease of living or the ease of compliance.
