An encounter broke out between militants and security forces in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, police said. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Okay village of Kulgam district which turned into an encounter, a police official said. He said there were no reports of any casualties so far on either side.
PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday said "legitimate doubts are looming" over the authenticity of the encounter in Rambagh area of the city here in which police killed three militants. Officials had said that three militants, including a self-styled commander of terror outfit The Resistance Front (TRF), wanted in the recent civilian killings in the city, were gunned down by security forces on Wednesday. In a tweet, Mufti said, "After yesterday's alleged encounter at Rambagh legitimate doubts are looming over its authenticity". The PDP chief charged that according to reports and witnesses "it seems that the firing was one sided". "Again the official version far from truth is not in line with ground realities as seen in Shopian, HMT & Hyderpora," the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister alleged. Lashkar-e-Toiba commander Umar Mushtaq Khandey is trapped in an encounter with security forces in the Pampore area of Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, a senior police official said on Saturday. Khandey is among the top militants whom the security forces are targeting since a hitlist was released by police in August this year. He was allegedly involved in the killing of two policemen at Baghat in Srinagar district earlier this year, Inspector General of Police (Kashmir) Vijay Kumar said in a tweet. "LeT commander amongst #top 10 #terrorists namely Umar Mustaq Khandey who was involved in #killing of two police personnel at Baghat #Srinagar & other terror crimes trapped in Pampore #Encounter," he tweeted.
