India's first-ever sickle-cell anaemia diagnostic kit was unveiled on Monday by a Bengaluru-based technology start-up, a company statement said. The technology, developed by ShanMukha Innovations, a start-up incubated by the Society for Innovation and Development (SID) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), provides an affordable and efficient solution to screen large populations as a point of care test for sickle-cell anaemia. The technology called High Performance Optical Spectroscopy (HPOS) consisting of test kits (SickleCert) and portable analyzer (HaemoCube) was developed by researchers at IISc, the statement said. "With a tiny amount of blood from a finger prick, the test provides highly accurate results in 15 minutes," says Sai Siva Gorthi, Principal Investigator and Associate Professor at the Instrumentation and Applied Physics Department, IISc. A newly developed air filtering technique that uses ingredients commonly found in green tea can deactivate germs that find refuge inside air filters, the Ministry of Science and Technology said in an official statement. A research team led by Prof Suryasarathi Bose and Prof Kaushik Chatterjee at Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, has developed a germ-destroying air filter that can inactivate germs using ingredients like polyphenols and polycationic polymers commonly found in green tea. The 'green' ingredients rupture the microbes through site-specific binding, the statement said. With a prolonged use, air filters become a breeding ground for captured germs. The growth of these germs clog the pores of the filter, reducing their life. Re-suspension of these germs can infect people in the vicinity, the statement said. Scientists at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore have developed and tested a novel SARS-CoV-2 virus-like particle that can potentially be developed into a COVID-19 vaccine candidate. To study the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the researchers need to isolate the virus from the samples, create multiple copies of it, and analyse its transmissibility and efficiency at entering living cells. However, working with such a highly infectious virus is dangerous and requires a Bio Safety Level-3 (BSL-3) lab, only a handful of which across the country are equipped to handle such viruses. State-owned Indian Bank on Friday said it has entered into an MOU with Society for Innovation and Development (SID), an initiative of Indian Institute of Science, for extending exclusive credit facility to Start-ups and MSMEs.
