Setting up more baggage checking machines and introducing electric vehicles to ferry passengers are among the key measures to be undertaken to handle increased footfall at the international airport here ahead of G20 events and the tourist season, officials said on Friday. Besides these, a police unit to cater to complaints and grievances of tourists and a police facilitation counter would also be setup, they said. The measures were announced on Thursday at a meeting to review the security aspects and functioning of the Srinagar international airport, the officials said. Union Minister Rameswar Teli on Monday called upon G20 countries to continue deliberations on the Employment Working Group's three priority areas - skill gaps, gig and platform economy and sustainable financing of social security- to translate them into clear strategies. India will play a lead role during its G20 presidency in redefining and reshaping the world which is facing multiple challenges, Indian Sherpa Amitabh Kant said here on Sunday. Talking about the trend in the past 10 years, Kant told PTI that the developed world would slow down and emerging markets would grow. Resources should therefore flow from the former to the latter so that emerging markets improve, he said. The G20 members represent around 85 per cent of global GDP, over 75 per cent of global trade, and about two-thirds of the world's population. Suggesting that tea plantations in West Bengal have the potential to become tourism hotspots, India's G20 coordinator Harsh Vardhan Shringla said on Saturday that community involvement in the tourism process is significant for its growth. Speaking to PTI on the sidelines of the second G20 Tourism Working Group Meeting here, Shringla also said that on the first day of the conference a lot of discussions were held on the states that are vulnerable to climate change such as Uttarakhand. "We had a lot of discussions on the issue of sustainable tourism and involving local communities...," he said. Shringla suggested that tea plantations in the area have the potential of becoming tourism hotspots and community participation in the tourism process is significant for its growth. Around 75 delegates will be arriving in Tripura on Sunday for a science conclave titled clean energy for green future' as part of the G20 meetings, Chief Minister Manik Saha said. Under the aegis of India's G20 Presidency, a 11-member expert group has been set up to suggest measures to strengthen multilateral development banks (MDBs). The finance ministry in a statement said Professor Lawrence Summers ( President Emeritus, Harvard University) and N K Singh (Former Chairperson, 15th Finance Commission of India) are co-convenors of the G20 Expert Group on strengthening MDBs. The panel would work on making a road map for an updated MDB ecosystem for the 21st century, touching upon all aspects of MDB evolution, and mechanisms for coordination among such banks to address and finance global development and other challenges more effectively. The panel would also evaluate various estimates regarding the scale of funding required by and from MDBs for addressing their and member countries' increased financing needs for SDG and transboundary challenges. The expert group will submit its report to the Indian Presidency of G20 before June 30, 2023, the ministry said.
India will be looking to push the rupee trade agenda in the G-20 meetings it is organising as part of its ongoing presidency of the forum, a senior bureaucrat said on Monday. Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said rupee trade will be of help, especially with those countries whose currencies are under pressure. "Definitely, we would like to see that rupee trade also happens, particularly those countries which are facing issues," Barthwal told reporters here, replying to a specific question if India will be looking at the upcoming G-20 meeting of the trade and investment group as a platform to boost rupee trade. He also said that the issue of rupee trade is not directly linked with the G-20 forum. It can be noted that as of now, India has been successful in forging agreements with 18 countries since embarking on the agenda of settling trade in the rupee amid currency volatility last year. Gujarat will host a meet on disaster management from March 30 till April 1 as part of India's G20 presidency, an official said on Friday. It was earlier announced by the government that Gujarat will host the next round of G20 meetings from March 27 till April 4, during which three meetings will take place in the state. While the first meeting on 'Environment and Climate Sustainability' will will take place between March 27 and 29 in Gandhinagar, this second meeting of 'Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group" will be held from March 30 till April 1, said Indian Administrative Service official Mona Khandhar, who is coordinating G20 events in Gujarat. A host of global issues pertaining to inflation, energy security and climate change would be discussed in the G20 second Framework Working Group meeting scheduled to begin Friday, Chief Economic Advisor V Anantha Nageswaran said here on Thursday. India along with the United Kingdom would play a 'facilitator role' in discussing the issues with member countries during the two-day summit, he said. "The Framework Working Group of the G20 Finance Track will discuss global macro economic issues of relevance today. Gujarat will host the next round of G20 meetings from March 27 to April 4, during which three conclaves will be held in the state on a range of issues, where delegates from different countries will converge for participation, said an official on Tuesday. India currently holds the year-long presidency of the Group of 20 (G20), which comprises 19 countries across continents and the European Union (EU). Of these three upcoming events in the state, the first meeting on "Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG)" will take place between March 27 and 29 in Gandhinagar, said IAS officer Mona Khandhar, who is coordinating G20 events in Gujarat. As preparations are afoot for hosting G20 event in Greater Noida later this year, the local traffic police personnel are undergoing soft skill training to ensure the international visitors do not face any obstacles on the road. The Noida traffic police personnel will be at the service of G20 dignitaries right from Delhi airport, where a helpdesk would be set up for them. They are also coordinating with their Delhi counterparts to chalk out plan for glitch-free movement on the roads during the event, officials here said. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday chaired a meeting of the parliamentary consultative committee for external affairs on India's G20 Presidency. The meeting was attended among others by Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor. Jaishankar posted a group photo on Twitter of those who attended the meeting.
