Food regulator FSSAI has warned traders, fruit handlers and food business operators (FBOs) not to use prohibited calcium carbide for artificial ripening of fruits and said strict actions will be taken against the users. The regulator asked them to use approved material like ethylene in a proper manner. In a statement, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said it has already prohibited the use of calcium carbide also known as 'Masala' as a ripening agent for artificial ripening of the fruits as per the provision in sub-regulation of Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulation, 2011. Food regulator FSSAI's CEO G Kamala Vardhana Rao has asked states to increase surveillance and random sampling of food items to curb adulteration. Rao also emphasised that in cases where the food samples are found to be non- conforming, the appropriate measures are required to be taken. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) "encouraged states/UTs to increase the regular surveillance, monitoring, inspections and random sampling of food products and their compliance with the laid down standards", according to a statement. Seven children of a special school for the visually-impaired from south Mumbai were hospitalised on Tuesday following symptoms of food poisoning and fever, officials said. The children, in the age group of 11 to 18 years, were rushed to a civic-run hospital in Mumbai Central after they complained of fever, vomiting and abdominal pains at around 12.45 pm. They are students of Victoria Memorial School for the blind situated in Tardeo area. A civic official said five of the seven children taken to the casualty section of the hospital were above 12 years, while two others are younger. "Five children complained of vomiting and abdominal pains while two others are suffering from fever," an official said, adding all seven children are admitted to the hospital and their health is stable now. It is not yet clear whether they ate a common meal or otherwise. Further details are awaited.

Food regulator FSSAI has asked states and Union Territories to deploy mobile testing vans to check quality of milk and milk products considering higher demand during upcoming Holi festival. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said in a statement that it has "directed states/UTs to deploy Food Safety on Wheels (FSW) mobile food testing vans, to check adulteration of milk and milk products considering the ensuing festive season of Holi." The authority has requested the Commissioner of Food Safety of all states/UTs to carry out testing of at least 10 samples of milk and milk products per FSW on a daily basis to tighten vigilance against milk adulteration. FSSAI has also urged consumers to get their milk and milk products tested through the FSWs deployed closest to them. The test can be carried out free of cost. The Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) has approved the Himalayan Yak as a 'food animal'. The move is expected to help check decline in the population of the high-altitude bovine animal by making it a part of the conventional milk and meat industry, an official at the National Research Centre (NRC) on Yak at Dirang in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh said. FSSAI has come out with draft regulations for genetically modified food, proposing mandatory prior approval from the regulator to manufacture, sell and import food or ingredients produced from genetically-modified organisms. The proposed Food Safety and Standards (Genetically Modified Foods) Regulations, 2022 will apply to Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) intended for food use, as per the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
