The Delhi Transport Corporation is likely to add 100 more electric buses to its fleet by March-end or the first week of April, officials said on Sunday. The new additions will take the Delhi Transport Corporation's (DTC) electric bus fleet to 400. Delhi Transport Commissioner Ashish Kundra recently visited Tata Motors' Lucknow plant to inspect the buses. Last month, DTC MD Shilpa Shinde visited Karnataka to oversee the prototype models. "We will get 100 electric buses by March-end or the first week of April. After that, 200-250 buses will arrive every month. "A DTC team had gone to Karnataka to see the prototype. It has been cleared and now we have come to the manufacturing plant in Lucknow for a formal inspection of the buses," said an official. The Jammu and Kashmir government is procuring a fleet of 200 electric buses to establish environment-friendly and socially sustainable network of public transport in the Union Territory's twin capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar, officials said on Friday. For this, Tata Motors has been given land to build the depot whose construction has started, they said. The Jammu and Kashmir government is procuring 100 e-buses each for both the capital cities, the officials said. The electric buses will establish an environmentally, socially and financially sustainable network of public transport in the city, said Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jammu Smart City Limited (JSCL) Rahul Yadav who reviewed the project. He said that the electric buses will play a vital role in facilitating tourists as well as people.

Shared e-mobility player GreenCell Mobility Ltd (GreenCell) on Monday said it has bagged an order for 570 electric buses from the Government of NCT Delhi. A tender was floated by state-owned Convergence Energy Services Ltd (CESL) under National E-bus Program (NEBP) for the order, the company said in a statement. "This contract for 6,465 E-buses under Gross Cost Contracting (GCC) basis is the largest tender for E-buses ever floated in India," it said. GreenCell had bid for 1,900 low-floor e-buses, in the tender floated by CESL, a government of India undertaking, and got a contract for 570 e-buses to be deployed over the next two years.

State-owned Convergence Energy Services Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), on Tuesday said the prices discovered for the 6,465 electric bus tender were 29 per cent lower than what it costs to operate diesel buses. By 2025 end, 80 per cent of Delhi's total bus fleet will be electric, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Monday and asserted that acquisition of e-buses will go a long way in reducing pollution in the national capital. Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) on Thursday announced floating a tender for deployment of 5,690 electric buses. This is the first tender under the National Electric Bus Programme which aims to effect the deployment of 50,000 e-buses across the country, CESL said in statement. "After the success of grand challenge based tender for 5,450 e-buses, CESL announces a tender has been floated for another 5,690 e-buses. This unified tender calling for proposals for the provision of mobility services benefits from the participation of Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Telangana and Arunachal Pradesh," it said. Mumbai's iconic double-decker buses are set for a comeback in an electric avatar with a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking official stating that their numbers will match the highs of the 1990s by next year. The financial capital is the last urban area where these double-deckers are still running, though they were once found in robust numbers in Kolkata, Bengaluru, Delhi, Thiruvananthapuram and Chennai, among other cities, officials said. According to officials, BEST had the highest number of double decker buses in 1990, before the figures started dipping post 1995. By 2006, the city's premier road transport utility had 225 double-deckers as losses began to mount and operating costs went north. There are some 50 left in Mumbai, most of these plying in the southern part of the city and some being used to give heritage tours to tourists.
