A tremor of 3.9 magnitude hit Surguja district in north Chhattisgarh on Friday, officials said. No loss of property or lives due to it has been reported so far, they said. "A 3.9 magnitude earthquake was felt in Ambikapur town (the headquarters of Surguja district) around 10.28 am. Its epicentre was 10 km deep from the surface of the earth and around 12 km away from Ambikapur town in West South West (WSW) direction," H P Chandra, meteorologist at Meteorological Centre Raipur, said. "It was a light category earthquake that did not cause any major destruction," he said, adding that it may, however, result in damage to kutcha (mud) houses located within 20 km radius of the epicentre. According to the official, it was the sixth earthquake in Chhattisgarh in the last 10 months and most of them occurred in the northern parts of the state. The Enforcement Directorate(ED) on Monday conducted raids at over a dozen locations in Chhattisgarh including at premises linked to state Congress leaders as part of an ongoing probe into the alleged coal levy scam, officials said. The raids that were underway over 12 hours after they were launched early this morning come days before the start of the three-day plenary session of the Congress party which is in power in the state. The three-day session begins on February 24 in Raipur. The Congress and state Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel cried foul over the raids calling it "vendetta politics" by the Centre, a charge rejected by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The Congress also raised questions over the timing of the raids. The Congress described the searches as an example of "third-rate politics" of "vendetta, vengeance and harassment", and asserted that the party will not be intimidated by such "tactics". More than 107 lakh metric tonnes of paddy has been procured from farmers under the support price scheme during the current kharif season in Chhattisgarh, which is higher than the previous record of 98 LMT in 2021-22, state government officials said on Wednesday. With this procurement, Chhattisgarh, popularly known as the 'rice bowl of central India', has become the first state in the country to procure paddy from 23.42 lakh farmers, they claimed. The three month long paddy procurement drive at minimum support price (MSP) concluded in the state on Tuesday. An all time high record was created with the purchase of more than 107.52 LMT of paddy, a state public relations department official said. Farmers have so far been paid Rs 22,037 crore against paddy procurement, he said. In the kharif marketing season 2021-22, 98 LMT of paddy was procured at MSP in the state, he said. The Chhattisgarh Assembly on Friday unanimously passed two amendment bills related to reservation in government jobs and admission in educational institutions in proportion to population of different categories, taking the total quota in the state to 76 per cent. Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel tabled the Chhattisgarh Public Service (Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes Reservation) Amendment Bill and Chhattisgarh Educational Institutions (Reservation in admission) Amendment Bill, which were passed after a debate of more than five hours. As per the bills, Scheduled Tribes will get quota of 32 per cent, Other Backward Classes 27 per cent, Scheduled Caste 13 per cent, while 4 per cent has been provisioned for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) in public employment and admissions in educational institutions. The Chhattisgarh cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Thursday approved the draft of two amendment bills related to reservation in admissions and government jobs in proportion to the population of different categories in the state, officials said. These bills, which if passed could take the overall quota to 76 per cent, will be tabled in the Assembly during its special session scheduled on December 1 and 2, they said. As per official sources, the bills provide 32 per cent reservation to Scheduled Tribes (ST), 27 per cent to Other Backward Classes (OBC) and 13 per cent to Scheduled Caste (SC), as announced in 2019 by the state government. The quantum of quota proposed for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) provisioned in the bills was not disclosed by officials, though some local media outlets said it could be 4 per cent. Chhattisgarh Assembly Deputy Speaker and ruling Congress MLA Manoj Singh Mandavi died on Sunday following a heart attack, party leaders said. Mandavi, 58, was taken to a hospital in neighbouring Dhamtari town after he suffered a heart attack where he died in the morning, state Congress communication wing head Sushil Anand Shukla said. Mandavi, who represented Bhanupratappur constituency in Kanker district, was at his native village Nathia Nawagaon in Charama area of the district on Saturday night. After he complained of uneasiness, he was taken to a hospital in Charama where doctors attended to him, Shukla said. Mandavi was then shifted to a hospital in neighbouring Dhamtari town where he died, the Congress leader said. The three-time MLA and a prominent tribal face of the party in Bastar region, Mandavi had served as the minister of state for home and prisons during the Ajit Jogi-led Congress government in the state between 2000 and 2003.
