Sensex today | Stock Market LIVE Updates today, Friday, January 9, 2026: Equity markets in India were volatile on Friday, a day after logging their worst sell-off in a month amid US tariff fears.

As of 12 PM, the Nifty 50 was trading 0.53 per cent or 138.05 points down at 25,741.60, and the Sensex was trading 0.53 per cent or 449.04 points down at 83,732.20 

In the Nifty 50, Eternal, HCLTech, and Asian Paints shares were top gainers, and ICICI Bank, Adani Enterprises, and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone were top losers.

In the broader markets, the Nifty Midcap 150 and the Nifty Smallcap 250 were trading 0.33 per cent and 0.79 per cent down, respectively. Hitachi Energy India, GE Vernova and T&D, Elecon Engineering Company, Indian Energy Exchange and Godrej Properties shares were the worst performing in the broader markets. 

Sector-wise, the Nifty realty and the Nifty Financial Services indices weighed the most, while the Nifty PSU Bank and the Nifty Oil and Gas led gains.

Shares of Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) witnessed a sharp rebound on January 9 amid lack of clarity from Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) on withdrawal of coupling order. At a hearing at Electricity Appellate Tribunal (APTEL) on Friday, CERC lawyer has sought more time to respond on withdrawal of coupling order. In a circular issued before the hearing, CERC said the market coupling order stays. At 11:10 AM on January 9, IEX shares were trading at flat ₹149.92, up 6 per cent from intraday low of ₹141.42.
