A clarification
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Thursday clarified that this report was based on an inappropriate comparison. The figures for previous years included all categories of returns, while those for AY 2022-23 were only for the non-audited category of returns. We stand corrected.
In response to the report, the CBDT stated: "The figures that have been quoted for each Assessment Year actually pertain to the total number of ITRs filed during the Financial Year till the end of the Financial Year and include ITRs pertaining to various categories of cases."
The last date for filing the ITR for AY23 for individuals that do not need an audit was fixed as July 31, 2022. The government did not extend the deadline. Also, the ITRs for other categories are yet to be filed.
The department also sent the figures related to the number of ITRs filed since FY19.
"It may be noted from the table above that ITRs at S. no.s 1 to 4 of the table are the total number of ITRs filed for the respective assessment years till the due date, including extended due date, which in many cases has spilled over to the following financial year," the clarification read.
The figure of 58.6 million does not include the ITRs filed under other categories. It remains to be seen whether the final figures for AY 2022-23 including all categories of returns, to be released later in the current financial year, are higher than those in the previous years.
