Before becoming a spokesperson for the BJP’s Delhi unit, Nupur Sharma worked with the youth wing of the party for many years. Although Sharma lost the election by a margin of 31,000 votes, her political career took off from there. Her appearances on television debates were marked by her firm advocacy of Hindutva.
Controversy over Nupur Sharma's comments on Prophet Muhammad
In June 2022, Sharma’s comment during a debate on a news channel regarding the Prophet Muhammad got her suspended from the party. Her allegedly insulting remarks drew ire from several Gulf nations including Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, who sought an apology from India.
Sharma later withdrew her comments and, in a statement posted on Twitter, said that her intention was not to hurt anyone.
