Who is Ashish Kumar Chauhan?
Ashish Kumar Chauhan is a business executive who currently serves as the CEO & MD of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). He is one of the founding members of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and is known as the father of modern financial derivatives in India. He is considered an expert in fields including information technology, markets, finance, and microstructure of the market.

On July 17, 2022, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) cleared Ashish Kumar Chauhan’s appointment for the post of managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) of the NSE where he would take charge after the shareholder’s approval. His appointment is seen as a sort of homecoming at NSE which is caught up with allegations of phone tapping by former bosses and investigations in connection with the collocation scandal.
Early life
Chauhan holds a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Bombay and is an alumnus of IIM Kolkata.
Career
Chauhan started his career at the Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI) bank in 1991. Following this, he was part of the founding team at NSE, where he worked from 1992 to 2000. He played a vital role in setting up the automated screen-based trading system at NSE. He holds the credit for creating frameworks including NSE certifications, Nifty index, etc.
He worked as the president and chief information officer of Reliance group from 2000-2009 and was also the CEO of Reliance Industries-owned cricket team, Mumbai Indians.
Chauhan joined BSE in 2009 as deputy CEO and in 2012 he was appointed as the CEO. He holds the credit for reviving BSE by making it the fastest stock exchange in the world with a response time of fewer than 6 microseconds. He is also credited for setting up India's First International Exchange in Gandhinagar, Gujarat which was inaugurated in 2017 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During his tenure, the BSE IPO, which was pending for over 10 years, was completed. Chauhan’s current tenure at BSE will end in November 2022.
Chauhan is serving as the chancellor of the University of Allahabad and has won several awards including CEO of the Year, Diamond Sabre Awards 2015, Hong Kong, Indian Business Leader of the Year, Horasis Interlaken/Switzerland 2015, and Best CEO in the Financial Markets.
