The top court had on March 13 extended indefinitely the March 31 deadline for linking bank accounts and mobile phone numbers with Aadhaar
The UIDAI's official handle tweeted about the launch and said that while residents can generate their VIDs right away, service providers are expected to start accepting it in place of Aadhaar 'soon'

However, UIDAI said residents have the option of permanently locking their biometrics and unlocking it temporarily
The circular also said people who do not have Aadhaar should be encouraged to get it
However, where even authentication through mobile number is not possible, the entities have to provide their own ways of authentication

The new feature will allow Aadhaar holders to quote their Virtual ID (VID) number without actually disclosing the 12-digit Aadhaar number
UIDAI said law prohibits it from doing any such analysis and therefore there is no scope of surveillance of any kind
Opinion on the issue is divided, with some saying the move would protect privacy, and others saying the technology is very expensive
It is believed that several countries, including some from India's neighbourhood, have approached New Delhi for assistance in this matter
At a recent court hearing, UIDAI admitted that 6% of Aadhaar authentication requests using fingerprints transactions are known to fail
One still needs to wait for the Supreme Court judgment on Aadhaar for all the pieces to fall into place
The issue gained prominence when French hacker Elliot Baptiste asked people on Twitter if they have the UIDAI helpline number on their contact list
UIDAI's response came after people on social media questioned why the number was being saved by default in people's contact list on Android phones
