Heavy rains lash parts of Guj; Valsad and Navsari worst hit

Heavy rains today marooned many residential and low-lying areas in Navsari and Valsad districts besides parts of Surat city in Gujarat. As per the state emergency control room, parts of Saurashtra region also received heavy showers. South Gujarat region, particularly Valsad and Navsari districts, have been bearing the brunt of downpour since early morning, leading to water logging on roads and overflowing of rivers which has affected normal life. Rains have been lashing south and central Gujarat since yesterday. Heavy rains led to water logging on several roads and marooned residential and low-lying areas in Navsari, Valsad and parts of Surat city today. Around 900 people have been shifted to safer places in various areas of state, especially central Gujarat, since yesterday. Heavy rains pummel parts of MP, normal life affected

Heavy rains lashed parts of Madhya Pradesh, including the state capital, where major water-logging created hardships for the people. In Bhopal, which recorded 11 cm rainfall in 24 hours till 8 am today, the low-lying areas were flooded due to overnight downpour. Mayor Alok Sharma sat on a chair in the middle of a waterlogged road near Saifia College in the city today to take stock of the situation. "Khandwa district and Mhow in Indore district recorded the highest rainfall of 15 cm in 24 hours till 8 am," Dr G D Mishra, senior meteorologist of India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bhopal told PTI. While many schools in Bhopal remained shut due to the downpour, those that were open witnessed thin attendance as most of the children could not reach their schools due to flooded roads. Chamba continues to be the hottest in Himachal

Chamba continues to be the hottest place in Himachal Pradesh for the second consecutive day today, the meteorological (MeT) department said. As per data provided by the MeT department, Chamba recorded the highest temperature in the state this morning at 33.1 degrees Celsius. It had experienced a highest of 32.7 degrees Celsius yesterday. Hamirpur recorded a maximum of 31.7 degrees Celsius today, followed by Bhuntar in Kullu district and Una where the maximum temperature was 31.6 degrees Celsius. However, the lowest temperature recorded in the state was 14.5 degrees Celsius in Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti district. Meanwhile, moderate to light rain occurred in some places since last evening. As per data recorded today morning, Paonta Sahib received 72.2 mm rain since yesterday evening, followed by Dharamshala with 31.2 mm and Una with 2.2 mm. It was a cloudy morning today with moderate rainfall predicted across the city in the later part of the day. The minimum temperature was recorded at 28.6 degrees Celsius, one notch above the season's average, said a MeT department official. The relative humidity was 74 per cent in the morning, he said. Meanwhile, traces of rain were registered in Safdarjung area of the city. The day is likely to remain cloudy with moderate rain expected in the later half, the weatherman said. Overcast skies, sultry conditions in Delhi

Overcast skies prevailed in the national capital with very light rains being witnessed in some parts, which increased the humidity level causing discomfort to Delhiites. The maximum temperature was recorded at 36.7 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season's average, while the minimum temperature settled at 29.6 degrees Celsius, two notches above the normal, said a Meteorological Department official. Traces of rainfall was recorded at the Safdarjung observatory, recording of which is considered the official figure for the city, while areas under Lodhi Road, Ridge, Ayanagar and Ridge remained dry. The humidity oscillated between 85 and 62 per cent, the official said. The Met office has forecast overcast skies along with the possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall in some places. Heavy rains continue to lash parts of HP

Heavy rains continued to lash parts of Himachal Pradesh, with Paonta Sahib of Sirmaur district receiving the highest rainfall during the last 24 hours, the Meteorological (MeT) Department said. MeT Director Manmohan Singh said that monsoon was normal as rainfall occurred at many places over the state during the last 24 hours. As per the data provided by the MeT department, Paonta Sahib received the highest rains at 202 mm, followed by Nahan-109 mm, Palampur-89 mm, Una-87 mm, Jogindernagar-62 mm, Bangana-45 mm, Jhandutta-40 mm, Sarkaghat-35 mm, Baijnath-33 mm, Renuka-26 mm. Berthin-24 mm, Rajgarh-22 mm, Nagrota Suriyan-19 mm, Kahu-18 mm, Bharari and Mandi-16 mm each, Saloni and Pandoh-15 mm each and both Naina Devi and Bilaspur received 14 mm rains during the last 24 hours. Temperatures hover close to normal at most places in Pb, Hry

The maximum temperatures today hovered close to normal limits at most places in Punjab and Haryana. Chandigarh, the common capital of the two states, recorded a maximum of 35 degrees Celsius, the Meteorological (MeT) Department report said. In Haryana, Ambala recorded a high of 34.4 degrees Celsius, while Bhiwani registered a maximum of 39.8 degrees Celsius. Karnal's maximum settled at 34.4 degrees Celsius, but Hisar braved the hot weather recording a high of 40.8 degrees Celsius. In Punjab, Ludhiana and Patiala recorded maximum temperatures of 34 degrees Celsius and 34.6 degrees Celsius, respectively. Amritsar's maximum settled at 33 degrees Celsius. Rains or thundershowers are likely at scattered places in Haryana and Punjab over the next two days, according to the MeT forecast.

Sultry conditions prevailed in the national capital today making life uncomfortable for Delhiites. However, in a promise of relief, the weather department has forecast one or two spells of rain tomorrow. The maximum temperature settled at 39.1 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season's average, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 29.2 degrees, two notches above the normal, said a Met department official. Humidity levels oscillated between 84 and 49 per cent. The Met office has forecast generally overcast skies, along with the likelihood of one or two spells of rain and thundershowers, tomorrow. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 37 and 28 degrees respectively," the weatherman said. Many places in Telangana receive good rainfall

With the southwest monsoon active over Telangana, many places in the state continued to receive good rainfall, which is expected to help farmers. Most places in the state received rainfall and heavy rain occurred at isolated places in Kumram Bheem Asifabad district, the India Meteorological Department said. Sirpur in the district received 11 cms of rainfall, followed by Chennur in Mancherial district (6 cms), it said. The rainfall was helping fill up tanks in Mancherial district, an official said. The rains, which began a few days ago, are useful for the farmers, he said. However, normal life was thrown out of gear at a few places in the state with streams overflowing. In its forecast for Telangana, the Met office predicted heavy rains at a few places and light to moderate showers at many places in the state.

Heat wave returns to Haryana, Punjab as monsoon plays truant

Heat wave conditions returned to many places in Haryana and Punjab today with the maximum temperatures settling above 40 degrees Celsius as monsoon played truant. The southwest monsoon reached Punjab and Haryana, including their shared capital Chandigarh, on June 28, but there has not been any significant rainfall activity over the past week, the meteorological department said. As a result, most parts of the states are witnessing above normal maximum temperatures, it added. Bhiwani and Hisar in Haryana today recorded a high of 40.8 degrees Celsius and 41.1 degrees Celsius respectively, a Met department report said. Heavy rain in Shimla as monsoon reactivates in Himachal

After taking a brief hiatus, monsoon has reactivated in several parts of Himachal Pradesh with the state capital Shimla witnessing heavy rain since midnight, the Metrological (MeT) department said today. The current surge during the ongoing monsoon season is likely to continue till July 14, Director of local MeT office Manmohan Singh said. As per data recorded by the MeT department at 8.30 am today, Shimla experienced 60.2 millimetre rainfall followed by Paonta Sahib (50.6 mm), Jubbarhatti (32.8 mm), Dharamshala (17.4 mm), Sudernagar (15.6 mm) and Kangra (9.6 mm) during the last 24 hours. The highest temperature in the state has been recorded in Una as 36.8 degrees Celsius whereas Keylong recorded a minimum of 13.4 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest place in the Himalayan state over the last 24 hours.

Heavy rains pound Jammu

Heavy rains today lashed Jammu, providing respite to the people from the scorching heat. The mercury was on the rise in the City of Temples since Thursday last. However, residents of the city today woke up to heavy rains which lashed the city for over an hour from 7:15 AM. A spokesman of the MET department said Jammu recorded 94.8 MM of rains till 8:30 AM and the minimum temperature dropped by over six notches to settle at 22.7 degrees Celsius. The city had recorded a high of 38.2 degrees Celsius and a low of 28.8 degrees Celsius yesterday, which was 2.3 and 3.1 notches above average, respectively. The MET office has predicted wet weather for the next five days with scattered to fairly widespread rains and thunder showers.
