Heavy rains cause traffic snarls in national capital

Heavy rains lashed parts of the national capital Friday, bringing respite from the humidity while causing traffic congestion at all major intersections across the city. Waterlogging was reported from many parts of the city. Traffic was affected on the Wazirabad Road, the Bhajan Pura Main Road and Khajuri Chowk in northeast Delhi. Other routes affected due to waterlogging were between Old Gurugram Road towards Rao Mata Din Marg Crossing and Fun N Food Village in southwest Delhi, and Rajapuri Chowk and Palam Flyover in west Delhi. According to MeT department, the humidity was recorded at 60 per cent. The minimum temperature was recorded at 25.6 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season's average. Heavy rains lashed parts of the national capital Friday, bringing respite from the humidity with the mercury settling at 32.4 degrees Celsius. According to MeT department, the humidity was recorded at 60 per cent. The minimum temperature was recorded at 25.6 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season's average. The weatherman has predicted light rains in several areas of the city tomorrow. "The skies will remain generally cloudy. There is possibility of light rain tomorrow," a MeT official said. The official said the minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to settle at 26.6 degrees and 34.4 degrees Celsius respectively.

Incessant rain cripples life in Odisha

Incessant rains crippled life in several parts of Odisha Thursday as the depression over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a deep depression, raising the likelihood of more downpour till Friday, officials said. Low-lying areas in several districts, including Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak and Khordha were inundated as heavy rain pounded many parts of the state since Tuesday, they said. Vehicular movement was disrupted at many places with roads getting submerged with rain water. Life was affected in the twin-city of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. With rain water leaving several areas marooned in Cuttack city, the administration declared closure of all educational institutions Thursday. Maximum temperatures hover above normal levels in Punjab, Haryana

The maximum temperatures hovered above normal levels in most parts of Punjab and Haryana Thursday. UT Chandigarh, the joint capital of both states, registered its maximum temperature at 35.2 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal limits, according to the MeT Department here. Among other places in Haryana, Ambala, Hisar, Bhiwani and Karnal recorded maximum temperatures at 33.9, 37.3, 34.6 and 34.4 degrees Celsius, respectively. In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a high of 36.1 degrees Celsius while Ludhiana and Patiala recorded their maximum temperatures at 35.2 and 35.6 degrees Celsius, respectively. According to a forecast by the MeT Department, rains or thundershowers are likely to occur at isolated places in Punjab and Haryana over the next two days.

9 die in rain-related incidents in UP

At least nine rain-related deaths were reported from different parts of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, an official said. With this, the total number of rain-related deaths in the state since September 1 has touched 58. In a statement issued here, the UP relief commissioner said on Wednesday, three rain-related deaths were reported from Faizabad while two lives were lost in Unnao. One person died each in Auraiyya, Hardoi, Meerut and Etah. On September 4, as many as nine people died in the state. This includes two in Faizabad and one each in Etah, Auraiyya, Sultanpur, Jaunpur, Hathras, Rae Bareli and Ghaziabad. Similarly on September 3, 14 lives were lost in the state. This includes three each in Gonda and Kushinagar, two each in Mirzapur and Bijnor. One person died each in Bahraich, Sitapur, Meerut and Unnao. Max temperatures stay close to normal in Punjab, Haryana

The maximum temperatures hovered close to normal levels in most parts of Punjab and Haryana Wednesday. UT Chandigarh, the joint capital of both states, registered its maximum temperature at 32.3 degrees Celsius, according to the MeT Department here. The city also received 0.4 mm of rainfall. Gordon makes landfall near Alabama-Mississippi border

Thousands of people were without power as Tropical Storm Gordon made landfall late Tuesday just west of the Alabama-Mississippi border. The National Hurricane center said Gordon struck about 10 p.m. and the storm is forecast to quickly weaken as it moves inland across Mississippi, Louisiana and into Arkansas through Thursday. It did not reach hurricane status. Gordon strengthened some in the final hours as it neared the central Gulf Coast, clocking top sustained winds of 110 kph. The National Hurricane Center said Gordon's tight core was about 30 kilometres southeast of Biloxi, Mississippi, or about 55 kilometres south of Mobile, Alabama, where heavy rains and winds picked up shortly before nightfall. Odisha likely to be lashed by heavy rains this weekend

Rain-battered Odisha is likely to be lashed by heavy downpours till this weekend with a low pressure set to shape up over the Bay of Bengal, the weatherman said. While rain and thundershower is likely to occur most places over north and south Odisha, heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at some places over northern region and Puri and Khordha districts, the Met office here said. Rajasthan records 'normal' rainfall this monsoon

Rajasthan has received normal rainfall this monsoon, according to the Water Resources Department here. The state received 433.38 mm rainfall during June 1 to September 3, which is 6.06 per cent less as compared to normal of 530.08 mm. Eighteen districts of the state which recorded normal rainfall are Alwar, Banswara, Baran, Bhilwara, Chittorgarh, Churu, Dausa, Dholpur, Dungarpur, Ganganagar, Jaipur, Jhalawar, Jhunjhunu, Karauli, Kota, Pratapgarh, Rajsamand and Udaipur. Ajmer, Barmer, Bundi, Hanumangarh, Jaisalmer, Jalore, Jodhpur, Nagaur, Pali, Sirohi and Tonk districts received 'deficit' rainfall (-20 to -59 per cent) while Bharatpur, Bikaner, Sawai Madhopur and Sikar districts were under 'excess' rainfall category (20-59 per cent). Heavy rains lash Rajasthan's Sawai Madhopur district

Heavy rains lashed Rajasthan's eastern districts in 24 hours, Met Department said Monday. In Sawai Madhopur district, Sawaimadhopur tehsil, Malarnadungar, Chauth ka Barwara and Bonli recorded 27, 16, 10 and 9 cm rainfall respectively while Chaksu (Jaipur) recorded 7 cm rainfall overnight, according to the department here. Many other areas also received below 7 cm rains during this period. Kota, Churu, Jaipur and Ajmer recorded 13.8, 4.8, 0.5 and 0.2 mm rains respectively till this evening. The weatherman has forecast heavy rains during next 24 hours at isolated places in eastern parts of the state.

Rain brings down mercury in Delhi

Rains lashed the city on Monday, bringing down maximum temperature to 29.5 degrees Celsius, five notches below the average. According to the MeT office, more rains are likely in the coming days. Moderate to light rain and thundershowers are expected on Tuesday. The spell of moderate to heavy rains continued with 41.6 mm rainfall recorded between 8.30 AM and 5.30 PM today, said a MeT department official. Delhi recorded 35.9 mm of rainfall between 8.30 am on Sunday and 8.30 AM on Monday. Potential tropical storm heads toward US Gulf Coast, Florida

A system moving quickly toward the central US Gulf Coast is expected to become a tropical storm by Monday evening, according to the National Hurricane Center. The system is brewing about 281 kilometers east-southeast of Marathon in the Florida Keys. Maximum sustained winds of the unnamed system have been clocked at 45 kph and the system is moving west-northwest at 24 kph. The Miami-based center said in a statement Sunday evening that a storm surge watch has been issued from the Mississippi-Alabama border westward to the Mouth of the Mississippi River. Moderate rainfall in city, suburbs

The city and mainly the southern districts of West Bengal witnessed moderate rainfall since early morning Sunday, met office said. Intense spell of thundershowers with lightning was witnessed in some places over Kolkata, districts of North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia and Murshidabad, officials at the city weather office said. The city's Alipore area recorded 7.3 mm rainfall, Canning in the South 24 Parganas district got 13.2 mm rain and Dumdum 2.3 mm, while Diamond Harbour witnessed the maximum rainfall with 15.1 mm. The city and its neighbouring areas are likely to be cloudy with a few spells of rain or thundershower while the maximum and minimum temperature are likely to be around 30C Celsius and 26C Celsius respectively, the met office said.
