Delhi: 12 trains delayed due to fog, air quality in 'severe' category

Dense fog on Wednesday blanketed the national capital and affected railway operations here, with around 12 trains being affected due to low visibility conditions.The list of the delayed trains included Puri-New Delhi Purushottam Express, Howrah-New Delhi Poorva Express, Bhagalpur-Anand Vihar Garib Rath Express, Varanasi-New Delhi Kashi Vishwanath Express and New Jalpaiguri-New Delhi Express. Delhi records third lowest min temp in last 50 years

Delhi recorded an average minimum temperature of 6.7 degrees Celsius in December 2018, the third lowest in the last 50 years, the India Meteorological Department said Tuesday. According to the IMD, the fog coverage data at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Palam showed it was the clearest month in the last 22 years in terms of visibility. "During the month of December 2018, Delhi recorded the average minimum temperature of 6.7 degrees Celsius, which was the third lowest during the last 50 years after 2005 and 1996, when the monthly minimum temperature was 6 degrees and 5.9 degrees respectively," the IMD said. The daily minimum temperature was below normal on 26 days. The monthly mean temperature was below normal by 1.6 degrees Celsius. The lowest minimum temperature recorded was 2.6 degrees on December 29 which was the fourth lowest in the last 50 years after 2013, 1996 and 1973. Odisha shivers as mercury continues to dip

Intense cold continued to grip Odisha with the mercury dipping below 8 degrees Celsius in at least 10 places on Tuesday. The weatherman has ruled out respite from chilly conditions in the next few days. The tourist destination of Daringibadi remained the coldest place in the state recording 4 degrees Celsius, while the mercury stood at 4.5 degrees Celsius in Phulbani, also in Kandhamal district, the meteorological centre here said. With the entire state reeling under biting cold, the mercury slipped below 8 degrees Celsius in at least 10 places and below 10 degrees Celsius in at least 19 locations in the state, it said. The mercury stood at 6.4 degrees Celsius in Keonjhar, while the minimum temperature was 6.6 degrees in Koraput and Angul, 7 degrees in Sonepur, Bhawanipatna, Titlagarh and Sundargarh, 7.5 degrees in Jharsuguda, 7.8 degrees in Sambalpur, 8 degrees in Balangir, 9.1 degrees in Hirakud, 9.2 degrees in Baripada, 9.4 degrees in Malkangiri and Telcher, and 9.9 .

Bright sunshine greeted Delhiites on New Year's Day allowing revellers to come out and celebrate, though the mercury remained on the lower side with the minimum temperature at 4 degrees Celsius. According to a Met department official, the maximum temperature was recorded at 23 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season's average, while the minimum temperature settled at 4 degrees, three notches below the normal. Massive gatherings were witnessed at major markets and popular party hotspots like Saket Select City Walk, Nehru Place, Khan Market, Rajouri Garden and Connaught Place. IMD issues alert for heavy rain, snowfall in HP on weekend

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy rain and snowfall in most parts of Himachal Pradesh on Friday and Saturday. Heavy rain and snowfall are likely to occur in most places of high, middle, low hills and plains on Friday and Saturday due to western disturbances, said Manmohan Singh, director, Meteorological Centre, Shimla. Issuing an 'orange warning' of heavy rain and snowfall in most parts of the state on Friday and Saturday, the Met director asked the authorities concerned to be prepared as heavy rain and snowfall may lead to blockage of roads and landslides, especially in regions of high and mid hills. The Kangra administration has asked its officials to take all possible precautionary measures following the advisory, a district official said. The lowest temperature was recorded in Keylong, the administrative centre Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre at minus 6.8 degrees Celsius.

Cold wave conditions continue in Punjab, Haryana

Cold wave conditions sweeping most parts of Punjab and Haryana continued unabated, with Bathinda becoming the coldest place in the two states on Tuesday, an official at the MeT Department said. Bathinda in Punjab reeled at a low of 0.7 degrees Celsius, followed by 1.6 degrees Celsius in Adampur, 2.3 degrees Celsius in Halwara, 2.4 degrees Celsius in Amritsar, 4.4 degrees Celsius in Ludhiana and 5 degrees Celsius at Patiala, he said. In Haryana, Hisar's minimum temperature settled at 2.8 degrees Celsius, Ambala 3.7 degrees Celsius, Karnal 3.4 degrees Celsius and 5.6 and 4.9 degrees Celsius in Bhiwani and Sirsa, respectively, the weatherman said. Union Territory Chandigarh too continued to be under the grip of intense cold conditions, with the minimum temperature settling at 4.2 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperatures in the two states on Tuesday settled between 16 to 20 degrees Celsius.

Slight respite from cold wave condition for Delhiites on New Year's Day

On New Year's Day, there was some respite for the people in Delhi from the cold wave conditions with the minimum temperature being recorded at 7 degrees Celsius against 3.8 degrees Celsius the previous night. The humidity level was recorded at 100 per cent. A meteorological department official on Tuesday predicted a bright day ahead with the maximum temperature expected to be hovering around 22 degrees Celsius. However cold wave conditions would prevail at isolated locations of the national capital, the official said. On Monday, the minimum and maximum temperatures were recorded at 3.8 degrees Celsius and 22.2 degrees Celsius respectively.

Minimum temp rises slightly in Kashmir owing to cloudy skies

There was some respite from the intense cold in Kashmir Valley as the minimum temperature rose slightly owing to overcast conditions, with Srinagar recording a low of minus 4.2 degrees Celsius, an over two-notch rise from minus 6.6 degrees Celsius the previous night. According to a meteorological department official, Qazigund in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 3.6 degrees Celsius, while the nearby Kokernag town registered a low of minus 1.9 degrees Celsius. Cold wave: Northern states shivers under tough conditions

Northern states of India continues to reel under the cold wave with minimum temperatures plummeting to single digit in several regions. A thick blanket of fog has enveloped Delhi and its surrounding regions resulting in poor visibility on Tuesday.As Delhi battles with cold wave, the overall air quality index (AQI) dropped to 430 on Tuesday, which falls under the 'severe' category.At Dhirpur, the AQI was 724 at 8:30 am, while in Mathura Road area it dipped to 'hazardous' category at 484. Furthermore, AQI near Pitampura, Airport, Terminal 3 and Delhi University stood at 459, 453 and 502 respectively. Cold wave conditions grip parts of T'gana;fresh warning issued

Normal life was thrown out of gear in parts of Telangana as cold wave conditions prevailed at various places in the state, officials said Monday. Severe cold wave conditions prevailed at isolated places in Medak and Warangal districts while a few places in the districts of Adilabad, Hyderabad and Peddapalle experinced cold wave conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its Daily Weather Report of Telangana. The Lowest Minimum Temperature of five degree Celsius was recorded at Adilabad, the report said. In its observations recorded at 0830 hours Monday, it said Medak, Hanmakonda, Ramagundam and Hyderabad recorded minimum temperatures (past 24 hours) of 6, 9, 9, 9 degrees C respectively. The minimum temperature at most places in Kashmir Valley and the Ladakh region plummeted, with Kargil experiencing the coldest night of the season so far, an official at the MeT Department said Monday. Collector wants blankets not bouquets on new year

: Adilabad district collector Divya Devarajan Monday appealed to people who come to her to extend new year greetings to bring blankets instead of bouquets, so that they could be distributed to the needy suffering from the cold wave conditions. She said the administration was doing its bestby setting up night shelters in the district headquarters and providing blankets to students of welfare hostels for relieffrom the cold wave. "Many people come to greet me on new year day (January 1). This time, it's so cold that instead of bouquets, I want people to bring a shawl, a rug or a sweater which I can give to the homeless and those in hostels. This is my request," she told reporters here. NE monsoon: 24 per cent deficit rainfall in TN, Pondy

With the north-east monsoon almost drawing to a close, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, its major beneficiaries, received a 24 per cent deficit rainfall during the three month-long season from October, the weather office has said. Both territories received only 34 cm rainfall during the season, Director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre S Balachandran said Monday. The only district that received 11 per cent surplus rain is Tirunelveli, he said. Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Chennai and Karur received rainfall 50 per cent less than normal. Fifteen districts received between one to 19 per cent deficit rainfall, he said. Last year, there was a rainfall deficit of nine per cent for Tamil Nadu. It was 62 per cent in 2016, the official said. Cold wave conditions continue in Pb, Hry; Adampur coldest at 1.1 deg C

Adampur in Punjab recorded a low of 1.1 degrees Celsius as cold wave conditions continued unabated in the state and neighbouring Haryana on Monday, Met officials said. Among other places in Punjab, piercing chill persisted in Amritsar, which recorded 1.3 degrees Celsius, down two notches against normal, Meteorological Department (MeT) officials said here. Gurdaspur recorded a low of 2.4 degrees Celsius and Ludhiana, too, experienced a cold night at 2.8 degrees Celsius, down two notches against normal, they said. Patiala's minimum temperature settled at 4.8 degrees Celsius, down one notch against normal while Halwara recorded a minimum of 2 degrees Celsius, the officials said. Cold wave subside in Himachal

Cold wave conditions slightly subsided and minimum temperature increased Monday in Himachal Pradesh, the Meteorological Department said. Snowfall is predicted in high and middle hill regions in the state, including Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Chamba, Solan, Sirmaur and tribal Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti districts on January 1 and 2, Director of Shimla Met department Manmohan Singh said. Keylong was the coldest in the state at minus 5 degrees Celsius between 5.30 pm Sunday and 8.30 am Monday, he added. The minimum temperature in Kalpa of Kinnaur district was minus 1.4 degrees Celsius, minus 0.6 degrees Celsius in Manali of Kullu district, 5.6 degrees Celsius in Shimla, 6.1 degrees Celsius in Dalhousie, 3.7 degrees Celsius in Kufri and 6.2 degrees Celsius in Chail, he said.

Cold wave condition hits life in Rajasthan, Mount Abu shivers at - 0.5 deg C

Cold wave conditions affected normal life in parts of Rajasthan, with Bhilwara, in the plains, recording a minimum temperature of 2 degrees Celsius. Mount Abu, the sole hill station of the desert state, registered a night temperature of minus 0.5 degree Celsius on Sunday night, the meteorological department said on Monday. Sikar, Pilani, Churu, Chittorgarh, Alwar, Dabok, Sriganganagar and Jaipur recorded minimum temperatures of 2.5 degrees Celsius, 3.5 degrees Celsius, 3.7 degrees Celsius, 3.9 degrees Celsius, 4.4 degrees Celsius, 5.2 degrees Celsius, 5.4 degrees Celsius and 5.6 degrees Celsius respectively. The night temperatures in Kota, Bikaner and Ajmer settled at 6 degrees Celsius, 6.2 degrees Celsius and 7.7 degrees Celsius respectively. Many areas in the state are under the gip of cold wave conditions which would persist for the next two day, the weatherman said.
