Snowfall in major tourist places of HP, min temp dips below freezing point

Major tourist places of Himachal Pradesh witnessed snowfall again, dipping the minimum temperatures below the freezing point in these areas Friday, the Meteorological (MeT) department said. Kufri 15 cm, Manali 10 cm, Shimla 6.9 cm and Kalpa 1 cm received snowfall from 5.30 pm Thursday to 8.30 am Friday, MeT Centre Shimla director Manmohan Singh said. Besides, several low hills and plains of the state received light rains from 0.6 mm to 7.8 mm during the period, Singh added. The minimum temperature in Kufri was minus 4.8 degrees Celsius, minus 2.4 degrees Celsius in Dalhousie, minus 1 degrees Celsius in Manali and minus 0.8 degrees Celsius in Shimla during the period, he said, adding that the minimum temperature in Kalpa was minus 6.2 degrees Celsius. Tribal Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong continued to be the coldest place in the state at minus 14 degrees Celsius, Singh said.

Rain, thunderstorm lashes Delhi again on Thursday late night

Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds hit the national capital again on late Thursday night.People took refuge at night shelters as heavy rain lashed the national capital. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rains along with thunderstorms and hail are expected on Friday as well. The weather department has predicted that on Friday the maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 19 degree Celsius and 10 degree Celsius, respectively.The weather department has also predicted fog on January 26 and 27.Western disturbance is the reason for rain accompanied by thunderstorm and hail in some parts of the city on Thursday. Cold day in the national capital

It was cold day in the national capital on Thursday as light rain fell in several parts of the region. The maximum temperature settled at 22 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season's average while the minimum temperature was recorded at 9.7 degrees Celsius, two notches above the normal, said a Met department official. The Safdarjung Observatory, recording of which is considered the official figure for the city, received 3 mm rain between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm. Areas under Palam and Lodhi Road recorded 1.2 mm and 1.7 mm rainfall during the same period. Ridge and Ayanagar observatories recorded traces of rainfall. The Met office has forecast rain and thunderstorm with hail in isolated places on Friday, "The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover at 19 and 10 degrees Celsius respectively," the weatherman said. Yesterday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 19 and 8 degrees Celsius.

Tourist places in Himachal reel under below sub zero temperature

Several tourist places of Himachal Pradesh are reeling under below sub zero temperature after fresh snowfall, the meteorological department said Thursday. The minimum temperature in Kinnaur's Kalpa was minus 6.7 degrees Celsius followed by minus 5.6 degrees Celsius in Manali of Kullu district, minus 4.8 degrees Celsius in Kufri of Shimla district, minus 1.6 degrees Celsius in Dalhousie of Chamba district and minus 1.1 degree Celsius in Shimla city, MeT Centre Shimla director Manmohan Singh said. The Keylong administrative centre continued to be the coldest place in the state at minus 11.8 degrees Celsius, he said. Meanwhile, Dalhousie and Manali received 10 cm and 2 cm of snowfall from 5.30 pm Wednesday to 8.30 am Thursday, the official said. Kalpa witnessed 14.1 cm of snowfall, while Keylong saw 2 cm of snowfall during the period, Singh added.

Jammu-Srinagar NH remains shut for third day, intermittent snowfall hampers snow clearance operations

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed for the third day on Thursday as fresh snowfall is hampering efforts of authorities to clear the road for vehicular movement. The arterial road was closed on Tuesday after a snow avalanche blocked both tubes of the Jawahar Tunnel on Qazigund side. The official said intermitted snowfall was hampering road clearance operations. "The Jammu-Srinagar Highway is still closed for traffic. Efforts are on to make the road traffic worthy at the earliest," an official of the traffic department told PTI. Intermittent snowfall has been experienced in the rest of the valley also since Thursday morning, a MET department official said. Meanwhile, the cold wave conditions intensified in Kashmir as the minimum temperature at most places witnessed a drop last night. Cold day in Delhi, dense fog, thundershower in forecast for Thursday

It was a cold day in the national capital with the minimum temperature settling at 8 degrees Celsius and the weatherman predicting dense fog for Thursday morning. "The minimum temperature was recorded at 8 degrees Celsius, which is normal for this time of the year, while maximum temperature settled at 19 degrees Celsius, a notch below the normal," a MeT official said. The humidity levels oscillated between 88 and 100 per cent. The city received 27.8 mm rains till 8.30 am, while no rainfall was recorded later in the day. The weatherman has predicted dense fog for Thursday morning with possibility of very light rains and thundershowers for later part of the the day. "Maximum temperature is likely to be around 19 degrees Celsius while the minimum may settle around 8 degrees," the official added.

Snowfall in Nepal hill stations around Kathmandu

Mountain regions across Nepal experienced heavy snowfall as Kathmandu valley received rainfall on Wednesday that led to a dip in temperatures. Night temperature drops in Kashmir

A significant drop in night temperature was recorded in many places of Kashmir, while the summer capital Srinagar saw the minimum temperature hovering around freezing point, a MeT department official said Wednesday. The minimum temperature settled at minus 0.3 degrees Celsius in Srinagar Tuesday night, he said. Qazigund the gateway town to the Valley in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 2.0 degree Celsius, a dip of nearly three degrees over the previous night. Massive snow clearance operation underway to restore Jammu-Srinagar NH

A massive snow-clearance operation is underway to restore the 270-km Jammu-Srinagar National Highway which remained closed for vehicular traffic for the third consecutive day Wednesday, officials said. The snow clearance operation on both sides of the Jawahar Tunnel - the gateway to Kashmir - was started and the snow-clearance operation is going on in full swing, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Traffic National Highway, Pardeep Singh Sen told PTI. An avalanche had also struck the Jawahar Tunnel area on Tuesday, blocking both tubes on Qazigund side. Punjab, Haryana reel under cold weather

A day after rains lashed Punjab and Haryana, most parts of the two states continued to reel under cold, with Adampur recording the lowest temperature at 5.3 degrees Celsius. An official of the MeT department said that in Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, mercury settled at 7.2 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal. In Amritsar, Ludhiana and Patiala of Punjab the minimum temperature was recorded at 5.4 degrees, 7 degrees and 6.5 degrees Celsius respectively. In Pathankot, Halwara, Bathinda and Faridkot mercury settled at 6.6 degrees, 6.5 degrees, 7.5 degrees, 9 degrees and 5.7 degrees Celsius. In Haryana, Ambala, Hisar and Karnal the minimum temperature settled at 7.2 degrees, 6.8 degrees and 5.4 degrees Celsius, upto five degrees above normal. Bhiwani, Sirsa, Rohtak and Narnaul recorded low temperature of 8.3 degrees, 8.9 degrees, 6.6 degrees and 10.2 degrees Celsius respectively.

Temperature dips to sub-zero in Himachal, Keylong coldest at -11 degrees
