Cold morning in Delhi, minimum temps settles at 5.5 deg Celsius

Delhiites woke up to a cold morning on Monday with the minimum temperature settling at 5.5 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season's average. The humidity was recorded at 94 per cent at 8.30 am, said a meteorological (Met) department official. The Met office has forecast clear skies during the day. "The skies will be clear. Strong gusty winds are likely to prevail during the day. The maximum temperature is likely to hover at 19 degrees Celsius," the weatherman said. On Sunday, the minimum temperature settled at 5.2 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature was recorded at 18.8 degrees Celsius.

More snowfall, rains predicted in HP from Jan 30

The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy snowfall and rains in Himachal Pradesh from Wednesday, an official said Sunday. A fresh western disturbance is very likely to affect western Himalayan and adjoining plains from January 29 and it would lead to scattered to fairly widespread rain and snowfall in the state from January 30 to February 1, Shimla MeT centre director Manmohan Singh said. On Sunday, Shimla received 1.1 cm of snowfall and Kinnaur's Kalpa got 0.3 cm of snowfall from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, he added. Janjehli in Mandi district, Kufri and Kharapathar in Shimla district also received 2 cm of snowfall during the period, he added. The maximum temperature in Keylong was minus 5.2 degrees Celsius, minus 2.8 degrees Celsius in Kalpa, minus 1.4 degrees Celsius in Kufri, 2.9 degrees Celsius in Dalhousie, 5.3 degrees Celsius in Manali and 6.8 degrees Celsius in Shimla on Sunday. Cold day in Delhi, mercury likely to drop further on Monday

It was a cold Sunday in the national capital, with the minimum temperature settling at 5.2 degrees Celsius, four notches below the average, the IMD said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the temperature to dip further on Monday with cold wave conditions during the day and moderate fog in the morning. "Clear sky with strong surface winds during the day and cold wave conditions are likely to prevail at isolated pockets," the official said. The maximum and minimum temperatures on Monday are likely to settle around 19 and 4 degrees Celsius respectively, the official added. Sunday's maximum temperature settled at 18.8 degrees Celsius, three notches below the average for this time of the season. The humidity levels oscillated between 100 and 49 per cent. On Saturday, the minimum temperature settled at 10 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature settled at 18.6 degrees Celsius.

Cold wave in Himachal

Cold wave conditions continued in Himachal Pradesh on Sunday with prominent tourist destinations of the state shivering below freezing temperatures, the Meteorological Department. The minimum temperature in Manali of Kullu district was minus 5 degrees Celsius, followed by minus 4.2 degrees Celsius in Kufri of Shimla district, minus 1.5 degrees Celsius in Dalhousie of Chamba district and minus 0.2 degree Celsius in the state capital, said Manmohan Singh, Director MeT Centre Shimla. Tribal district Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong continued to be the coldest place with a low of minus 17 degrees Celsius from 5.30 pm Saturday to 8.30 am Sunday, he said. The minimum temperature in another tribal district Kinnaur's Kalpa was minus 5.2 degrees Celsius, Singh added.

No let up in cold wave in Pb, Hry

Cold wave conditions continued in most parts of Punjab and Haryana on Sunday, with Adampur being the coldest place in the region at 1.8 degrees Celsius. Many places in Punjab recorded below normal minimum temperatures, the Meteorological Department said. Biting cold prevailed in Halwara, which recorded a low of 3.5 degrees Celsius, while Amritsar, Pathankot, Bathinda and Faridkot recorded near similar below normal lows of 4 degrees Celsius, 4.4 degrees Celsius, 4 degrees Celsius and 4.5 degrees Celsius, respectively. Patiala 5.7 degrees Celsius, Ludhiana 6.3 degrees Celsius and Gurdaspur 5.9 degrees Celsius also experienced a cold night, the MeT said. Fresh snowfall hampers efforts to reopen Jammu-Srinagar NH

A fresh spell of snowfall hampered the efforts of authorities to reopen the Jammu-Srinagar national highway which remained closed for the sixth consecutive day on Saturday, officials said. The continuous closure of the 270-km highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with rest of the country, had left hundreds of passengers stranded here. The highway was closed on Monday following heavy snowfall in Jawahar Tunnel area the gateway to Kashmir - and multiple landslides triggered by the incessant rains between Banihal to Ramban over the past week. "The road clearance operation was going on in full swing and it was expected that the road will be made traffic worthy by Saturday evening. Shimla, Dalhousie, Kufri, Chail get more snowfall, temp dips in HP

Several tourist places in Himachal Pradesh continued to get snowfall Saturday, further dipping the temperature in the areas, the meteorological department said. Dalhousie (10 cm), Kufri (8 cm), Chail (8 cm) and Shimla (5.6 cm) received snowfall from 5.30pm Friday to 8.30am Saturday, Shimla meteorological centre Director Manmohan Singh said. Tribal areas Kalpa and Keylong also received snowfall of 12.4 cm and 8 cm respectively during the period, he added. Besides, several areas of the state witnessed rainfall between 1.6 mm and 7 mm, he added. Rains bring respite from Delhi pollution

Fresh snowfall in U'khand; Nainital receives season's first

Nainital received the first snowfall of the season on Friday while Mussoorie, Chakrata and other places located at a height of 2,000 metres and above in Uttarakhand received fresh spells of snow, leaving the highways to Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri and over 60 rural roads blocked, officials said. Areas around Nainital like Kilbury and China Peak had received snowfall earlier this month but the tourist town itself wore a thin sheet of white on Friday after receiving the season's first snowfall. On the downside, a total of 64 rural motorable roads in the state were blocked by snow, officials of the Disaster Management Office here said. The Rishikesh-Gangotri national highway was clogged with snow from Sukhitop to Gangotri, while the Rishikesh-Yamunotri highway got blocked from Raditop to Yamunotri, they added. Rainfall in Rajasthan, temp drops by 1 to 4 degrees Celsius

Moderate to heavy rainfall was recorded in parts of Rajasthan during last 24 hours resulting in temperature drop, a Met official said Friday. The minimum temperature dropped by 1 to 4 degrees Celsius at most places in the state, the Met department said. Dense fog reduced visibility to 50 metres in Sriganganagar and Pilani districts of the state, he said. On Friday morning, Roopbas of Bharatpur and Sepau of Dholpur district recorded 3 cm of rainfall followed by 2 cm of each in Baseri, Badi, Rajakheda, Mangaliyawas, Udaipurvati, Bansur, Neem Ka Thana, Dholpur, Kotputli, Pisangan, Pawta and Mahwa. Jammu-Srinagar NH closed for fifth day

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed for the fifth day on Friday as fresh snowfall hampered efforts of authorities to clear the road for vehicular movement. The arterial road was closed on Tuesday after a snow avalanche had blocked both tubes of the Jawahar Tunnel on Qazigund side. The official said intermittent snowfall was hampering road clearance operations. "The Jammu-Srinagar highway is still closed for traffic. Efforts are on to make the road traffic worthy at the earliest," an official of the traffic department told PTI. Snowfall has been experienced in the rest of the valley also since Friday morning with Srinagar city getting nearly two inches of snow in the early hours, a MET department official said. Meanwhile, cold wave conditions persisted in Kashmir as the minimum temperature at all places stayed well below the freezing point last night.
