'External interference' won't be tolerated, says China on Taiwan at UNGA

China underscored its commitment on Saturday to its claim on Taiwan, telling assembled world leaders that anyone who gets in the way of its determination to reunify with the self-governing island would be crushed by the wheels of history. The language was forceful but, for Chinese leadership, well within the realm of normal. Only when China is fully reunified can there be true peace across the Taiwan Strait, Wang Yi, China's foreign minister, said at the UN General Assembly. He said Beijing would take the most forceful steps to oppose external interference. China regularly and vehemently defends its claim to Taiwan, which separated from the mainland after a 1949 civil war and now functions with its own government. A visit last month by the speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, markedly ratcheted up tensions between Washington and Beijing. The language, while pointed, reflected China's typical intensity about the island; its claim seldom goes unmentioned in maj

No plan to meet Biden at UN General Assembly, says Iranian President Raisi

Iran's president headed on Monday to New York, where he will be speaking to the UN General Assembly later this week, saying that he has no plans to meet with President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the U.N. event. President Ebrahim Raisi spoke at the Tehran airport before his departure as talks to revive Iran's tattered nuclear deal with world powers remain stalled. There is no plan for a meeting or negotiations with US leaders," Raisi said. We have no plans whatsoever for meeting them. The Iranian president called his appearance at the United Nations an opportunity to explain to the world about alleged malice that unspecified nations and world powers have toward Iran. He did not elaborate. Raisi, who is accompanied by Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani, is to address both the General Assembly and a UNESCO meeting on religions. Talks between Iran and world powers over reviving a 2015 nuclear deal remained stalled though Tehran

China values relationship with UN despite human rights criticism

As world leaders gather in New York at the annual UN General Assembly, rising superpower China is also focusing on another United Nations body that is meeting across the Atlantic Ocean in Geneva. Chinese diplomats are speaking out and lobbying others at an ongoing session of the Human Rights Council to thwart a possible call for further scrutiny of what it calls its anti-extremism campaign in Xinjiang, following a UN report on abuses against Uyghurs and other largely Muslim ethnic groups in the western China border region. The concurrent meetings, on opposite sides of the Atlantic, illustrate China's divided approach to the United Nations and its growing global influence. Beijing looks to the UN, where it can count on support from countries it has befriended and in many cases assisted financially, as a counterweight to U.S.-led blocs such as the Group of Seven, which have grown increasingly hostile toward China. China sees the UN as an important forum that it can use to further its
