Telecom major Jio topped the 4G network speed chart in terms of average download and upload for the first time in about six years of its commercial operation, according to data published by sector regulator Trai. While Jio's 4G upload speed marginally improved to 6.4 megabit per second, the speed on Vodafone Idea (Vi) network dropped to 5.9 mbps in September from 6.7 mbps in August. Vi was leading the chart for the last several quarters in the uploading speed segment. The average speed is computed by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India based on the data it collects across India with the help of its MySpeed application on a real-time basis. Airtel and BSNL networks registered a 3.4 mbps upload speed in September. Jio continued to maintain its leadership in the 4G download chart. In September, the telecom major recorded an average download speed of 19.1 mbps. It was followed by Airtel, which recorded a download speed of 14 mbps, followed by Vi at 12.7 mbps and BSNL at 5 mbps.

US telecom gear maker Cisco's subsidiary Webex India has received a telecom licence from the government that will enable it to provide enterprise grade national and international telecom connectivity. Webex has become the first Over-The-Top (OTT) player to get a telecom licence. At present, the company is a web-conferencing platform for enterprises. It has already procured a virtual network operator licence in July. "We can confirm that Cisco was granted a telecom licence. This licence will enable us to offer enhanced Webex collaboration services to our partners and customers in India," a Cisco spokesperson told PTI on Tuesday. Telecom subscriber base in the country grew marginally to 117.29 crore in June with Reliance Jio adding maximum number of new customers, according to data released by sector regulator Trai on Wednesday. There were 117.07 crore subscribers in May 2022. "The number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 1,170.73 million at the end of May 2022 to 1,172.96 million at the end of June 2022, thereby showing a monthly growth rate of 0.19 per cent," Trai said in the report. The wireless subscriber base grew to 114.73 crore in June from 114.55 crore in May. Reliance Jio's wireless subscriber base grew to 41.3 crore with net addition of 42.23 lakh customers.
