IUC cut a boost for Reliance Industries

The Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI)'s decision to cut interconnect usage charge (IUC) by 57 per cent from 1st October and further to nil from start of 2020 further boosted street sentiment towards Reliance Industries (RIL). The RIL stock hit new highs of Rs 872.10 following expectations of better prospects of its telecom venture, Jio. Although analysts had expected IUC charges to be revised from current 14 paise to 7 paise per minute, TRAI reduced it to 6 paise effective 1st October. This should bring down costs for Reliance Jio. Motilal Oswal Securities estimates IUC cost savings of Rs 6,000 crore to Rs 4,500 crore, while adding that Jio's IUC per subscriber should reduce from Rs 85 to Rs 40. Analysts at Kotak Institutional Equities say that for Jio, which is running a net IUC bill of about $1 billion, this would mean an annualised saving of $550-600 million. Not surprising that analysts at CLSA see the cut in IUC boosting RIL's earnings by eight per cent over FY18-20. Trai recommends delicensing of some spectrum for M2M services

In order to facilitate smooth roll-out of machine-to-machine (M2M) communications utilizing licence exempt airwaves, sectoral regulator Trai has recommended delicencing of a chunk of spectrum in a few bands. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) in its recommendations on "spectrum, roaming and quality of service related requirements in M2M communications" said spectrum allocation should be technology and service neutral and no separate spectrum band should be allocated exclusively for M2M services. However, in order to facilitate smooth roll-out of M2M services utilizing "licence exempt spectrum, 1 MHz of spectrum at 868 MHz (867-868) and a chunk of 6 MHz of spectrum at 915-935 MHz is recommended to be delicenced. Delicencing the V-band (57-64 GHZ) as recommended by the Authority on various occasions may be done on priority."M2M is the basis for automated information exchange between machines and can impact various industry verticals like smart city, smart grid, smart water, ..

Trai starts exercise for next spectrum auction across 9 bands

Sectoral regulator Trai has started the exercise for conducting next round of spectrum auction for airwaves spread across nine bands, which include two new bands that can be used for deploying 5G services as well as the spectrum which remained unsold in the last sale. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in April had sought recommendations from Trai for the reserve price and as well as quantum of airwaves to be sold in auction, planned to be held in 2017.However, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) said given that 60 per cent of the airwaves remained unsold in the last auction held in October 2016 and concerns have been raised about the financial health of telecom industry, it is to be consulted when to conduct the auction and if entire airwaves should be put on the block at one go or should the airwaves be sold in a phased manner.Trai said the government is planning to auction the right to use of spectrum in 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, ..
