Police broke the indefinite fast of YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) president, Y S Sharmila in protest against alleged denial of permission to continue her statewide 'padayatra' and shifted her to a hospital here in the small hours of Sunday, after her health deteriorated. Sharmila had launched the indefinite hunger strike at the party headquarters here on Friday. Police forced media personnel, party leaders and cadres, to move away from the location and foiled Sharmila's fast before she was "forcefully" shifted to the hospital at around 1.00 AM today, the party said. Sharmila, did not even consume water, which resulted in her health condition deteriorating rapidly, it said. Lt Governor VK Saxena has approved and forwarded a proposal to the Union Home Ministry for issuance of a notification to implement a Telangana law in Delhi which allows the police to take offenders in preventive custody, officials said. In June, the Delhi Police had sought approval for issuance of the notification to extend the Telangana Prevention of Dangerous activities Act, 1986, to the Delhi government citing "a need for stringent legislation for prevention and effective control" of criminal activities, they said. The Act is applicable for prevention of activities of boot-leggers, drug traffickers, land grabbers, those involved in adulteration of food, making fake documents, snatching, robbery, arms running, sale of drugs, gambling, sexual offences, cyber crime among others. The company on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Telangana government to set up research and manufacturing facilities for lithium-ion battery-making in Mahbubnagar district, Amara Raja Batteries said in a regulatory filing. "Over the next 10 years, the company intends to invest over Rs 9500 crore, after necessary approvals," it added. Telangana Tourism expects increase of 20 per cent in foreign tourist arrivals and 30 per cent growth in domestic tourist footfall to the state by end of 2023 as compared to pre-COVID level, a senior government official said. Telangana witnessed domestic tourist arrivals of 3,20,00,620 while international tourists numbered 5,917 in 2021. For this year, domestic arrivals increased to 3,95,53,865 and international arrivals rose to 35,945 up to July. During 2019 when the pandemic had not yet set in, the domestic arrivals in the state was 8,30,35,894 while the number of foreign travellers was 3,23,326. Already, there is increase in the count of foreign travellers visiting Telangana and there has been growth in domestic tourists arriving this year, the official said. The Telangana government has accorded administrative sanction for an amount of Rs 69.52 crore towards procurement and distribution of Adolescent Health Kits to girl students studying in government schools and colleges. The kits, comprising zipper bag, sanitary napkins and water bottle, would be provided to girl students studying in classes 8th to Intermediate second year (12th standard) in government schools and government colleges under adolescent health programme. The expenditure shall be met from the NHM (National Health Mission) funds, the government said in an order dated November 16, adding that the Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare and Mission Director (NHM) shall take necessary action.
