Caste-based head count begins in Bihar; Tejashwi terms it 'historic step'

Terming the caste-based head count that began in Bihar on Saturday as a 'historic' step, Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav said the exercise will provide scientific data for carrying out welfare schemes for weaker sections of the society. Noting that all the parties of the ruling 'Mahagathbandhan' were in favour of the exercise, the RJD leader claimed that the BJP was "critical" about the survey. "The enumeration exercise began in Bihar from today. It is a historic step taken by the Mahagathbandhan' government in the state. Once the exercise is completed, it will provide scientific data to the state government for carrying out developmental work for people, including those who are deprived," Yadav said, while speaking to media persons here. He also said, "The BJP is an anti-poor party which always opposed this exercise and has always been critical about the caste-based head out." Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had on Friday said that the caste-based enumeration exercise could be ..

RJD MLA's remark against Bihar CM unacceptable, says Tejashwi Yadav

Taking strong exception to RJD MLA Sudhakar Singh's objectionable remarks against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, party leader and Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav said the comment was "unacceptable" and tantamount to supporting the BJP. The matter has been brought to the notice of RJD president Lalu Prasad, Yadav said. Interacting with reporters on Monday, Singh, the former agriculture minister, compared Kumar to Shikhandi -- a eunuch character in Mahabharata -- and said he has no standing of his own. "Making such comments against the person who is leading the Grand Alliance government in Bihar is simply supporting the BJP and its policies. Whatever he has said about the CM is highly objectionable," Yadav told reporters on Tuesday. When asked whether the party would take disciplinary action against Singh, he said, "The matter is serious. That is why it has been brought to the notice of the party supremo." Party leaders are advised to desist from making such statements, Yadav said. Si

Nitish Kumar drops hints he may pass on mantle to Tejashwi Yadav

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday dropped further hints that he was looking forward to passing on the mantle to his young deputy Tejashwi Yadav, leaders emerging from a meeting of legislators of the ruling 'Mahagathbandhan' said. The septuagenarian JD(U) supremo, once again, ruled himself out as a prime ministerial candidate for the next Lok Sabha polls even as he maintained that a "united opposition" could defeat the Narendra Modi-led BJP in 2024. "The chief minister pointed towards Tejashwi ji and said he is the leader of the future, under whose leadership the 2025 assembly polls in the state would be fought," said Mahboob Alam, the legislature party leader of the CPI(ML) Liberation which supports the government from outside. He also said "we are of the view that it will benefit the grand alliance which is fighting the communal forces represented by the BJP. Tejashwi ji is a young and energetic leader". BJP demands FIR against Nitish, Tejashwi for violating code of conduct

The BJP on Thursday demanded that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, his deputy Tejashwi Yadav, senior ministers and top government officials be booked for alleged violation of model code of conduct in force in the state in view of urban local body polls. The State Election Commission (SEC) on Wednesday announced December 18 and 28 as the new dates for municipal polls, which were initially to be held in October, but got postponed following a Patna High Court order. Bihar BJP president Sanjay Jaiswal claimed that Wednesday's notification "makes it clear that model code of conduct was in force" even after the postponement of polls. The saffron party's contention was, however, rejected by the government. "The CM and the Deputy CM launched Har Ghar Gangaajal scheme with much fanfare over the weekend. Earlier, they had taken part in many functions where job aspirants were given letters of appointment by various departments. They, along with cabinet colleagues and the bureaucrats concerne

Lalu to undergo kidney transplant on Dec 5, says RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav

Rashtriya Janata Dal president Lalu Prasad will go under the knife at Singapore on December 5 for a kidney transplant, his son and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav said on Wednesday. The RJD heir apparent made the disclosure at a rally in Kurhani assembly segment, where the disqualification of the party's MLA Anil Sahani has necessitated a by-poll, which, incidentally, is also scheduled for December 5. "Lalu ji wanted to be here, but he is in Singapore where he will undergo a kidney transplant on December 5. He has, however, asked me to convey his message to you that he wants the BJP to be defeated, said Yadav, whose party is backing Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U) in Kurhani. "Lalu ji has asked me to remind you all that his poor health is to be blamed on the vendetta politics of the BJP, which has forced him to spend a long time in jail, said Yadav. Prasad enjoys a cult status among the OBCs and the minorities, despite allegations of corruption during the tenure as .

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his deputy, Tejashwi Yadav, will campaign for JD (U) candidate Manoj Singh Kushwaha in the December 5 by-poll to the Kurhani assembly constituency in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district. Talking to reporters here on Friday, Bihar JD (U) President Umesh Singh Kushwaha claimed that the 'Mahagathbandhan' (Grand Alliance) candidate will win with a huge margin. "The Kurhani by-poll is one-sided and the Mahagathbandhan's candidate Kushwaha will win with a huge margin. He has the support of the seven-parties of Grand Alliance. Both the CM and the Deputy CM will campaign for Kushwaha. We will soon announce the dates of their campaign," the JD(U) state president said. Bihar will be among top 5 states in 2 yrs if given special status: Tejashwi

Bihar can leapfrog to be counted among the top five states of the country in just two years if the Centre fulfills the long-standing demand for special status, Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav said on Saturday. The young RJD leader made the claim while complaining about inadequate central aid for urban local bodies of the state and asserting that by its own efforts, Bihar was the best performer in terms of infrastructure growth. "Headquarters of all 38 districts in the state have urban local bodies. For the development of these, the Centre has, as per 15th Finance Commission recommendations, released a paltry sum of Rs 7.35 crore," fumed Yadav, who also holds the Urban Development portfolio. "We will be getting just a fraction of Rs 1,988 crore earmarked for Uttar Pradesh. Our share is much smaller than that of Jharkhand, which is getting Rs 12 crore though it is smaller than Bihar," alleged Yadav. He said Bihar sends 40 MPs to the Lok Sabha with voters of the state helping "a

Nitish may not canvass for Bihar bypolls, Tejashwi to hit campaign trail

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday said he might not campaign for the by-elections to a couple of assembly segments in the state where his current ally RJD is locked in a straight contest with former alliance partner BJP. Kumar, who is nursing injuries he sustained recently when his motorboat crashed into the pillar of a bridge on Ganga, said this in reply to questions from journalists who asked him about his schedule for Mokama and Gopalganj where by-polls are scheduled on November 3. "All my party colleagues are campaigning. I need to take precautions till I recover fully," said the JD(U) leader, who had disclosed his injury on Wednesday. The mishap had taken place on October 15 and the administration had said that all the occupants of the motorboat were safe. Speculations are rife that the RJD which seeks to retain Mokama and wrest Gopalganj from the BJP, is keen on Kumar lending his weight to its campaign for the two seats. Meanwhile, the BJP claimed that Kumar was

Tejashwi rubbishes speculations about another volte face by Nitish

Speculations about Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's return to the BJP-led NDA have received a thumbs down from his deputy Tejashwi Yadav, who asserted that the 'Mahagathbandhan' is going strong. Yadav, who is the heir apparent of the RJD, the largest constituent of the ruling coalition, also said that his party enjoyed the full support of alliance partners and looked forward to winning by-elections to two assembly seats Mokama and Gopalganj -- scheduled to be held next week. "It was decided by all coalition partners that we contest both seats. Mokama is our sitting seat while Gopalganj is my native district. We are confident of a Mahagathbandhan victory at both places," Yadav told reporters on Monday at Jehanabad, where he had gone to attend the death anniversary of a deceased party colleague. The by-poll at Mokama has been necessitated by disqualification of Anant Kumar Singh, who has been convicted in cases relating to arms and explosives recovered from his residences. His wif

IRCTC scam case: Delhi court refuses to cancel bail of Tejashwi Yadav

A Delhi court on Tuesday refused to cancel the bail granted to Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav on a plea by the CBI in the IRCTC scam, saying it did not find any specific ground to order cancellation of the relief. Special Judge Geetanjali Goel, while declining the CBI's petition, asked the young RJD leader to be careful with words and use them appropriately. In its petition, the CBI had claimed Yadav, at a recent press conference, attempted to subvert the process of law and thwart the entire investigation as well as the consequent trial, and blatantly abused the liberty granted to him. It alleged Yadav issued "direct threat" to CBI officers and their families and "indirect threat" to witnesses. The central probe agency accused Yadav of having attempted to "portray the CBI in bad light and under the influence of political parties" by using innuendoes such as "Jamai" (son-in- law) of a political party. "You are on very responsible post. It is not right to use such words
