EWS quota: TN calls legislature parties meeting to discuss course of action

The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday announced convening a meeting of various legislature parties on November 12 to discuss the next course of action following the Supreme Court upholding the 10 per cent EWS quota. Chief Minister M K Stalin will chair the meeting. The EWS quota is "against social justice and equality," a government release said, adding, the meeting of all legislature party leaders will discuss the next course of action in this issue. Stalin had earlier said the SC verdict on EWS is a setback to century-long social justice struggle.

SC verdict on EWS a setback to century-long social justice struggle: Stalin

The Supreme Court judgment upholding 10 per cent reservation to people belonging to economically weaker sections (EWS) in upper caste in admissions and government jobs is a setback to the century-long social justice struggle, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin said on Monday. Political parties and all like-minded organisations in Tamil Nadu should come together to protect social justice and ensure it is heard across the country, Stalin, who is the president of the ruling DMK said, reacting to the Supreme Court's Monday judgment upholding the validity of the 103rd Constitution amendment providing 10 per cent reservation to the EWS in admissions and government jobs. The top court said the law on EWS quota does not violate the basic structure of the Constitution. Tamil Nadu reports 119 new coronavirus infections in last 24 hours

Tamil Nadu has reported 119 new COVID-19 cases, pushing the tally to 35,92,696 till date, the Department of Health said on Saturday. There were no fresh fatalities and the overall death toll remained unchanged at 38,048, a bulletin said here. As many as 204 people got recuperated from the virus in the last 24 hours, aggregating to 35,53,509 leaving 1,139 active infections. Chennai added 30 new cases to the tally while the rest were spread across other districts. Eight of the 38 districts reported zero new cases. The State capital leads among districts with 249 active infections and overall 7,92,816 cases. A total of 8,664 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, pushing the cumulative number of tests to 6,98,16,827 so far, said the bulletin.

Tamil Nadu reports 128 new Covid cases, no fatalities in past 24 hours

Tamil Nadu reported 128 fresh coronavirus cases on Thursday, taking the tally to 35,92,454 till date. There were no fatalities today. The death toll continued to be at 38,048. The active cases declined to 1,309 as against 1,395 on Wednesday, a bulletin said. As many as 214 patients were discharged today following treatment, taking the net recoveries to 35,53,097 so far.

Mamata Banerjee hints at discussing political issues with M K Stalin today

West Bengal Cheif Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday hinted that she may discuss political issues and collaboration with other regional parties at her courtesy call on her Tamil Nadu counterpart MK Stalin, slated for this evening. Describing her call on the DMK strongman as a courtesy, she, however, added, when two politicians meet, some politics are always discussed. She was speaking to reporters at Kolkata airport before leaving for Chennai. The Trinamool Congress supremo said, I trust all the regional parties... they are going to play an important role in the 2024 elections. Banerjee is travelling to Chennai as she has been invited by West Bengal Governor La Ganesan to his elder brother's birthday on November 3. The West Bengal CM may also meet several top politicians of Tamil Nadu, who are expected to be present at Ganesan's family function. Banerjee had, in the past, met several opposition leaders to try to forge unity among them.

Electricity dept in full preparedness to meet NE monsoon: TN Minister

All preventive measures have been taken in the State to meet the North East Monsoon challenges, Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister V Senthil Balaji said on Tuesday. A total of 1.5 lakh electricity board staff are in preparedness and special officers have been appointed 24X7 to monitor during rains, the minister told reporters here. Senthil Balaji, who was here to participate in the ward committee and area sabha meet as part of celebrating local bodies day, said the grievances of the public will be accepted as petitions and would find solution as soon as possible, since such meetings are being held at 846 places in 100 wards in the city. In the last one-and-half years rule of DMK, Rs 211 crore worth road projects were started and some are in completion stage and others are in progress, he said adding that an additional Rs 200 crore was allotted for the works.

Heavy rainfall recorded in parts of Tamil Nadu, normal life disrupted

Normal life has been disrupted following a spate of heavy rainfall in the state of Tamil Nadu. After recording heavy rainfall in Chennai, schools in certain areas of the city were closed.Following the heavy downpour, the District collector announced holidays for schools and colleges in Mayiladuthurai (Only schools), Thiruvarur, and Nagaipattam due to heavy rain.Today, heavy rainfall was recorded in Nagapattinam district. It was recorded at 45.40 mm of rainfall. Though, no injuries or cattle or human loss was recorded.After heavy rainfall water logging can be seen in parts of Chennai. Tamil Nadu reports 152 new Covid cases, active tally declines to 1,602

Tamil Nadu reported 152 fresh coronavirus cases on Monday, taking the tally to 35,92,043. With no fatalities, the death toll continued to remain at 38,048 today. The active cases declined to 1,602 from 1,732 on Sunday, a bulletin from the health department said. Wickremesinghe hopeful of resolving problems faced by ethnic Tamils

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has said he is hopeful of resolving the problems faced by ethnic Tamils in the country, as he announced the appointment of a committee to find ways to integrate the Indian-origin workers in the plantation sector into the society. Wickremesinghe's remarks came on Sunday during an event in Colombo to accept a consignment of medicine donated by the Union Territory of Puducherry at the request of Ceylon Worker's Congress (CWC), a leading political party representing the Indian-origin Tamils in the Central Province.
