Tamil Nadu registered 183 fresh Covid-19 infections on Wednesday while the active cases continued to drop. The active cases slipped to 2,533 from 2,736 on Tuesday, according to a bulletin. Both the daily additions and the active cases were on the decline over the past many days. As many as 386 people were cured of the disease today. There was no virus-related death, the bulletin said. As many as 35,91,226 people tested positive so far. The total recoveries stood at 35,50,645. The State recorded 38,048 deaths till date.

Tamil Nadu's gross state domestic product GSDP, one of the vital indicators of the state's economy, grew by 5.87 per cent during the period 2020-21 despite the contribution from industries and the services sector between 2016-17 and 2020-21 declining, a report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India said on Thursday. The report which was tabled during the Assembly session said the GSDP grew by 5.87 per cent as compared to 2019-20 which stood at 10.25 per cent. However, the GSDP at 5.87 per cent was against the country's growth rate of a negative 2.97 per cent, the report said. The GSDP is the value of all the goods and services produced within a state and the growth of GSDP is an important indicator of the economy, as it denotes the extent of changes in the level of economic development of the state over a period of time. The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday tabled in Assembly the reports of separate Commissions of Inquiry that looked into the circumstances surrounding the death of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and the 2018 police firing at Thoothukudi in the state. The Justice A Arumughaswamy Commission of Inquiry that probed the circumstances leading to Jayalalithaa's death in 2016, in its concluding remarks said that V K Sasikala, the late Chief Minister's confidante, "have to be found fault with and investigation is to be ordered." The panel also has named others alongwith Sasikala. The Justice Aruna Jagadeesan Commission of Inquiry, which probed the 2018 police firing at Thoothukudi on anti-Sterlite protesters --that claimed 13 lives-- has blamed the police authorities.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Sunday staunchly opposed what he called a Parliamentary panel's "recommendation" that for specific jobs, aspirants should have learnt the Hindi language. Writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Stalin referred to media reportage on a report of the Parliamentary Committee on Official Languages. Stalin said: "It has been reported that the Committee, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, submitted its report to the President of India, wherein inter-alia, has recommended that Hindi should be the compulsory medium of instruction in educational institutions of the Union government such as IITs, IIMs, AIIMS and central universities and Hindi should replace English."
