Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022: 'Sports should not be politicised', says Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday that "sports should not be politicised," days after it was announced to criticism that he would attend the World Cup in Qatar if France reaches the semifinals. Speaking in Bangkok, Macron said issues about Qatar's human rights record and the environment were "questions you have to ask yourself when you award the event." Qatar won the hosting rights for this year's tournament in a FIFA vote in 2010. The World Cup has sparked multiple controversies from the living conditions of migrant workers to the impact on the environment of air-conditioned stadiums and the place of LGBTQ people, women and minorities. The first World Cup to be held in an Arab country opens on Sunday. On Monday, the presidential Elysee said Macron will go to the Qatar if the country's national team reaches the semifinals, specifying that the French president "wrote them a message" to this effect. Last month, the city of Paris said it will not broadcast World Cu

Tanya, Mansi shift focus on U20 athletes with record breaking performances

Tanya Chaudhary from Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand's Mansi Negi produced national record breaking performances in the women's hammer throw and 10000m race walk in the 37th AFI National Junior Athletics Championships here on Sunday. On the first two days, athletes from the younger age groups were the ones who broke national records. Tanya improved her own U20 National records from 57.04, set in Nadiad earlier this year to 58.30m. She first broke the meet mark of 50.74m, set by Anisha Dahiya in Mangalagiri in 2019 on her second visit to the circle with a 52.21m effort. She followed that up with her maiden throw past the 58m mark. In the women's U20 10000m race walk, Mansi clocked 47 minutes 30.94 seconds to take ownership of the U20 National and Meet records. Munita Prajapati had pegged both records at 47:53.58 at the Sarusajai Stadium here last year. In fact, Haryana's Rachana (49:14.88) and Maharashtra's Sejal Anil Singh (49:29.31) also went past the earlier mark.

Asian Championships: Lovlina, Parveen strike gold, Minakshi bags silver

Lovlina Borgohain looked at ease as she struck gold in her maiden appearance in the middleweight division while Parveen Hooda took home the 63kg Asian Championships title in Amman, Jordan on Friday. While Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina, competing in her maiden tournament in the 75kg category, cruised to a 5-0 unanimous decision win over Ruzmetova Sokhiba of Uzbekistan, Parveen notched a facile victory by a similar margin over Japan's Kito Mai. Minakshi, on the other hand, concluded her maiden Asian Championships campaign by clinching a silver medal in the flyweight division (52kg). The win will be a big morale booster for the 25-year-old Lovlina who has struggled to find form since her bronze-winning exploits at the Tokyo Olympics. She made early exits in the World Championships and Commonwealth Games earlier this year. The Assam boxer has moved up from 69kg to 75kg division as her former weight class doesn't feature in the Paris Olympics. The two boxers started the proceedings

Many seniors players like Kohli, Ashwin won't play T20 next year: Sources

India's T20 squad will undergo a major transition in the next 24 months because senior players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin will be gradually eased out, BCCI sources said on Thursday. While it appears that Ashwin and Dinesh Karthik have played their last games in the shortest format, the BCCI will leave it on Kohli and Rohit to decide on their T20I future. After team's humiliating defeat in the T20 World Cup semifinal, a visibly upset Rohit was consoled by head coach Rahul Dravid, who fronted the media after the match. The next T20 World Cup is still two years away and if those privy to developments are to be believed, there will be a brand new team in place with Hardik Pandya being the long-term captaincy choice. "The BCCI never asks anyone to retire. It is an individual decision. But yes, with just a handful of T20Is scheduled in 2023, most of the seniors will concentrate on ODIs and Test matches in that cycle," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of

Football: FIFA has named 3 women to referee World Cup matches in Qatar

Japanese referee Yoshimi Yamashita knows that being one of three women picked to officiate matches at the World Cup the first time a woman will be in charge on the game's biggest stage is not simply about soccer. Stephanie Frappart of France and Salima Mukansanga of Rwanda must be of the same mind. They are in a pool of 36 referees listed for Qatar the rest are all men. FIFA has also named three female assistant referees in a pool of 69: Neuza Back of Brazil, Karen Diaz Medina of Mexico and Kathryn Nesbitt of the United States. Yamashita is aware that her selection put the focus on Japan's low ranking on most measures of equal pay for women, and in global studies of gender equality. I would be very happy if women could play an active role in sports in this way, and if sports and especially soccer could lead this, Yamashita said in an interview with The Associated Press. "In Japan, there is still a long way to go in the world of soccer (regarding participation of women), so it wo
