Twitter scrambles to fix meltdown as many unable to tweet after glitch

Many Twitter users found themselves unable to tweet, follow accounts or access their direct messages on Wednesday as the Elon Musk-owned platform experienced a slew of widespread technical problems. "Twitter may not be working as expected for some of you. Sorry for the trouble. We're aware and working to get this fixed," the company tweeted from its "support" account. Further details were unavailable Wednesday afternoon and an email seeking comment from the company's press account went unanswered. Twitter has dissolved its media relations team. Users first noticed the problem when they tried to send tweets and received a message saying they had reached their "tweet limit". While Twitter has for years limited the number of tweets an account can send, it is 2,400 per day or 100 an hour far more than most regular, human-run accounts send on the platform. The government neither controls social media intermediaries nor casts any fetters on the freedom of expression of their users, Parliament was informed on Wednesday. Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar in a written reply to the Lok Sabha said that the IT Rules, 2021, cast specific obligations on the intermediaries that no intermediaries shall violate the rights accorded to citizens under the constitution. "The government does not interfere or control social media intermediaries and also does not cast any fetters on freedom of expression on their users. WhatsApp bans 3.6 million accounts in India in November, shows report

Instant messaging platform WhatsApp on Wednesday said it banned 36.77 lakh accounts in India in November, marginally lower than the number of accounts it barred in the preceding month. The banned WhatsApp accounts in India include 13.89 lakh accounts which were barred proactively before being flagged by users. In December, WhatsApp banned 37.16 lakh accounts in the country, including 9.9 lakh accounts which were barred proactively. "Between 1 December 2022 and 31 December 2022, 3,677,000 WhatsApp accounts were banned. 1,389,000 of these accounts were proactively banned, before any reports from users," WhatsApp said in its India Monthly Report for December published under the Information Technology Rules 2021.
