Social media has enabled the voices of the outsider to be heard in a system dominated by elites and made government institutions more accountable, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said here on Friday. Speaking during a debate on 'Social Media Strengthens Democracy' at the Tata Literature Festival, he said social media gives voice to the voiceless and this can be seen in the way popular protests have been organized in many countries in recent times. Mobilisation through social media helped usher in democracy in a country like Tunisia, Tharoor said. He also pointed out how social media was used by pro-democracy protestors in Hong Kong, and how it helped movements like Black Lives Matter, Occupy Wall Street and agitations for abortion rights in the US and anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) protest in India. Social media has permitted the outsider also to be heard in the narrative that has traditionally been dominated by elites, insiders and for the first time the outsider gets to have
Confidence in the company has eroded so rapidly that, even before Musk's bankruptcy comments, some funds were offering to buy the loans for as little as 60 cents on the dollar
Twitter is once again adding gray official labels to some prominent accounts. The company, in its second chaotic week after billionaire Elon Musk took over, had rolled out the labels earlier this week, only to kill them a few hours later. But on Thursday night they were back again, at least for some accounts including Twitter's own, as well as big companies like Amazon, Nike and Coca-Cola. Some media companies, such as The New York Times and The New Yorker also had the labels as of 9 pm Pacific time, while others, like The Wall Street Journal and The Los Angeles Times, did not. Celebrities, some of whom have been impersonated this week since Musk began overhauling Twitter's blue check verification system, also did not appear to be getting the official label. Twitter began offering a subscription service this week that for USD 8 a month gets anyone who wants without actual verification the blue check mark that previously was given to prominent accounts to prevent impersonation.
On November 1, Musk said that the subscription pack would be 'adjusted by country proportionate to purchasing power parity'
The new Twitter CEO also said that going forward, accounts engaged in parody must include 'parody' in their name, not just in bio
Users started creating accounts pretending to be major brands and politicians, fooling users and potentially jeopardizing Twitter's now-shaky reputation with top advertisers

"Rollout of new verified Blue is intentionally limited just to iOS in a few countries with very little promotion. As we iron out issues, we will expand worldwide on all platforms," Musk said
The stock closed down 7.2% at $177.59 in New York on Wednesday, dropping to its lowest since November 2020
A tweet from the 'Twitter Support' account read, "We're not currently putting an "Official" label on accounts but we are aggressively going after impersonation and deception."
Musk said that Twitter will do lots of dumb things in coming months
An 'Official' label has been added to the Twitter handle of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and some other ministers as the US-based social media platform started rolling out a feature to distinguish between the Twitter Blue account and verified accounts. Modi's verified blue tick Twitter handle @narendramodi was marked 'Official' with a tick mark enclosed in a circle. The same was label was also seen on the Twitter handles of Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and some other ministers. Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi, some other opposition party leaders as well as sportspersons like Sachin Tendulkar too were given that label. This is in line with Twitter's just-announced changes for verified accounts, as part of its new USD 8 premium subscription product. The 'Official' label is given for select verified accounts including major media outlets and governments. Twitter official Esther
