An Indian-origin driver jailed for four years in 2016 after he fatally knocked down a 71-year-old senior citizen has won a High Court appeal in Scotland to get his driving licence back earlier than the 10-year driving ban imposed at the time. Sandeep Singh told the Glasgow court recently that he needed to be back on the road to expand his restaurant business. The 36-year-old will have to pass an extended driving test before getting his licence back. "I do not do this lightly. You need to be careful behind the wheel as (any further offending) you could be facing a very significant sentence. I hope we do not see you again," Judge Lady Rita Rae told Singh during a hearing covered by the local media this week. According to the Glasgow Evening Times', Singh's lawyer told a previous hearing that he was in charge of the family's restaurant business due to the failing health of his parents. The business now offered the opportunity of "franchising" in the UK and America. Lady Rae had ask
The announcement Sunday that a Libyan man suspected in the 1988 bombing of a passenger jet has been taken into U.S. custody put the spotlight back on the notorious terrorist attack and longstanding efforts to pursue those responsible. The suspect, Abu Agela Mas'ud Kheir Al-Marimi, is accused of building the bomb that destroyed a Pam Am flight over the Scottish town of Lockerbie. The attack killed all 259 people aboard the plane and 11 on the ground. The majority of those killed were Americans. Thirty-four years later, the public's memories of the attack have largely faded, despite developments in the case that have intermittently returned it to the headlines. Here's a look back: HOW DID THE LOCKERBIE ATTACK HAPPEN? On Dec. 21, 1988, a bomb planted aboard Pam Am Flight 103 exploded less than half an hour after the jet departed London's Heathrow airport, bound for New York. The attack destroyed the jet, which was carrying citizens of 21 countries. Among the victims were 190 America
Authorities in Scotland said Sunday that the Libyan man suspected of making the bomb that destroyed a passenger plane over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988 is in U.S. custody. Scotland's Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service said in a statement: The families of those killed in the Lockerbie bombing have been told that the suspect Abu Agela Mas'ud Kheir Al-Marimi is in U.S. custody. Pan Am flight 103 exploded over Lockerbie on Dec. 21, 1988, leaving 270 people dead. It remains the deadliest terror attack on British soil. In 2001, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was convicted of bombing the flight. He was the only person convicted over the attack. Scottish prosecutors and police, working with U.K. government and U.S. colleagues, will continue to pursue this investigation, with the sole aim of bringing those who acted along with al-Megrahi to justice, the Crown Office added.
Scotland dished out a perfect all-round display to stun two-time champions West Indies by 42 runs in a rain-interrupted Group B fixture of the T20 World Cup here on Monday. Invited to bat, Scotland put on a challenging 160 for five on the back of opener George Munsey's sparkling unbeaten 66 off 53 balls, which was studded with nine fours. The Scots then defended the total in style as West Indies, the most successful side in the T20 World Cup, looked a shadow of their past and folded for 118 in 18.3 overs. West Indies now must win their next match against Zimbabwe on Wednesday to remain in contention for the Super 12 stage. The Richie Berrington-led side, on the other hand, need a win against European rivals Ireland to qualify for the Super 12 stage. "We haven't had as many T20 games as we would have liked but have played a lot of 50-overs cricket. It was about transferring those skills to the short form," Berrington said. Hailing their spinners effort, he added: "They have done i

Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away peacefully in her Scotland summer residence of Balmoral Castle three weeks ago, succumbed to old age, according to an extract of the late monarch's death certificate released on Thursday. The document, released by the National Records of Scotland, notes Britain's longest-serving monarch died at 3.10 pm local time on September 8 due to "old age". The Queen's daughter, Princess Anne, is named as the "informant" on the document as it would have been her who notified the local registrar of her mother's death. When paying tribute to her mother, the Princess Royal revealed that she was with the head of state in her last moments. Anne, who accompanied her mother's coffin as it travelled from Balmoral to London via Edinburgh, said: "I was fortunate to share the last 24 hours of my dearest mother's life." The Queen was laid to rest at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle in a private burial ceremony following a state funeral attended by around 100 ...

Thousands lined the route to catch a glimpse as Queen Elizabeth II's coffin, seen in public for the first time, made its journey on Sunday from Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire to arrive at the late monarch's official Scottish residence of Holyroodhouse Palace in the capital city of Edinburgh. It is the end of the first stage of what her eldest son, King Charles III, has described as his mother's "last great journey" ahead of her funeral in London on September 19. At the end of a six-hour journey, the coffin draped with the Royal Standard of Scotland and featuring a wreath of flowers on top is to rest in the Throne Room of Holyroodhouse until Monday afternoon for the royal household to pay their respects to Britain's Queen, who died peacefully aged 96 at Balmoral on Thursday evening. The seven-car cortege, with a police escort and the Queen's daughter Princess Anne, slowly made its way towards Edinburgh, as crowds of people gathered to see it pass and showered it with flowers on t

Liz Truss, a onetime accountant who has served in Parliament for the past 12 years, became Britain's prime minister on Tuesday after Queen Elizabeth II formally asked her to form a government. The ceremony, which took place at a royal residence in Scotland, followed a bruising two-month contest to succeed Boris Johnson, who formally offered his resignation to the queen shortly before Truss arrived to take up the mantle. The handover of power is governed by rules and traditions built up over the centuries, as the U.K. evolved from an absolute monarchy to a modern parliamentary democracy where the sovereign plays an important but largely ceremonial role as head of state. Here is a brief description of Tuesday's events and how Britain arrived at this point. HOW DID LIZ TRUSS BECOME PRIME MINISTER? Boris Johnson announced his intention to step down as prime minister and leader of the ruling Conservative Party on July 7, after dozens of Cabinet ministers and lower-level officials resig
Seven artefacts, including a stone door jamb stolen from a Hindu temple in Uttar Pradesh, has been transferred back to India by Glasgow's museums as part of Scotland's largest-ever repatriation of objects from a single collection. Glasgow Life, a charitable organisation which runs the city's museums, had confirmed the handover earlier this year and the arrangement was formalised on Friday at a transfer of ownership ceremony at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in the presence of Acting Indian High Commissioner to the UK Sujit Ghosh. The seven antiquities to now find their way back to India include a ceremonial Indo-Persian talwar or sword, believed to date back to the 14th century, and an 11th century carved stone door jamb taken from a temple in Kanpur.
